steering shaft clunk

I know why they say Chevy is the heartbeat of America- just spin the steering wheel around while parking and you hear "clunk - clunk, clunk - clunk".... haha, sorry to be a smarta**.

 

Took my truck in for the new tailgate cables and also had the TSB in hand about the revised intermediate steering shaft, and they dummied up and said "we've never heard of that one." C'mon, guys, you see this everyday; do you expect me to believe that? Got the COLD shoulder. No shuttle available and had to walk to work.

 

Well, it's being "serviced" now and I'll pick it up after work today. Time to find another dealer. Oh, maybe I should apologize for troubling them to do my warranty service......that's what I get for purchasing a new vehicle from them? Time to stop before I get hotter. Sorry for the rant.

I with you. my doppy dealer is still greasing the I shaft. could you fax me a copy of that TSB please!!

 

and they refust to replace my snap, popple and crack exhaust. says there is NO bulliten.

The latest TSB I have seen is # 00-02-35-003E (Jul. 20, 2004) Replace upper Intermediate Steeering Shaft Assembly. Its a d**n disgrace GM has not resolved this issue. I guess if people are not being killed, its not a priority. I stopped by my dealer on 11/5/04 to have my shaft replaced. The parts tech stated that a NEW redesigned shaft is being produced and has not been tested as of yet. He said it may be available in a month or so. According to the tech, the redesigned shafts that were being used to replace the originals, were also defective! To top it all off, GM is informing the service techs to revert back to the original fix, "Lube Kit". I for one know this approach is only a temporary fix. I performed this myself and low and behold the "knock, knock, knock" is back. What a surprize! Some people have stated that the have had their shafts replaced with good results, as for me, I'll wait until the NEW second redesign becomes available.

OK, the latest TSB for steering clunk is now#00-02-35-003F, dated Aug. 4, 2004, and supercedes the one mentioned above with the suffix E (thanks for providing it nonetheless). In short:

 

2002-2003 Escalade

1999-2003 Silverado

2000-2003 Suburban and Tahoe

2002-2003 Avalanche

1999-2003 Sierra

2000-2003 Yukon

2003 Hummer H2

 

Affected vehicles include both 2WD and 4WD vehicles.

 

This does not include the midsize utilities such as:

 

Buick Rainier

Trailblazer

Envoy

Olds Bravada

 

Refer to service bulletin 02-02-35-006A for these mid size utilities.

 

Condition- "Some customers may comment on a clunk type noise coming from under the hood that can also be felt in the steering wheel. These conditions may be more noticeable when turning at low speeds on rough road surfaces."

 

The bulletin continues on with a rather lengthy procedure on changing the intermediate shaft.

 

The part # is 88963611 - upper intermediate shaft for use on all 1500 series trucks

EXCEPT Escalades, Denalis, and Avalanches.

 

The part # is 89060582 upper intermediate shaft for use on all 2500 and 3500 series trucks EXCEPT Escalades, Denalis, Avalanches, and H2.

Sorry about your luck. I took mine in to the dealer where I bought mine, said the steering wheel was popping and could be felt through the wheel during a turn.

 

They tossed me the keys to a brand new pontiac and away I went. 3 hours later they called and said it was ready to be picked up. They also said they know about the TSB and I wasnt the first....

 

Turned in the car empty and they didnt even care about that.

I guess that says they lube it to make you happy, until they get more replacements. Make sure you get the replacement one stated in the previous bulletin(s), when they get them.

Walked to work? WTF? No way in hell I would do that. Sure the service writer boys think I'm crazy and an ass but they dont blow me off either.

 

I'll gladly give GM a vulgar phone call.

 

 

HOpefully things worked out for the best. Don't let them step on your toes. The stealer did it to me once and I was determined it wasnt going to happen again......

holy cow dude, that's exactly what happened to me. no shuttle and i explained a problem im having and they said they hadnt heard of it either and knew that i couldnt stay and repro the issue w/ them and they didnt even bother looking at it closer....slackers....

I was about to call and schedule my 04 Yukon XL in for the same clunking problem. It's only got 4k on it. The bulletin above does not mention 04's, though. Oh well, I'll take it in anyway and let them figure it out, I guess.

I seriously would find a new dealer, if my dealer said that they knew nothing of the intermediate shaft klunk. This issue has been around for years.

I took my 03 sub in for this, I have 20K on it. Spoke with the service writer and he wrote it up and I asked him it they were going to lube or replace the shaft. He said replacment only. GM does not allow dealers to lube the shafts any longer. Also, that the part was on a 6 week back order. The manufacturer can only produce 2000 per day. My name is on the list no problems and he had all of the info. Not sure where you are located, but Henna in Austin in great.

My dealer wants $115 for the i-shaft part # is 88963611 for the 1500 series. The install looks fairly simple (sticky'd post). How's that price compared to what you guys are hearing?!?

mines under warranty still and will be for quite a while. 7yr/75k w/ 20,000k on it now....ill take it in sometime soon.
