Intake Questions

Ok, i just went into my stock air box and actually looked around in there.  I noticed that there are two different air passages that go outside the box.  one is a rectangular tube sitting on the bottom, and the other is a slit type thing above that.  they both seem to go through the side of the engine bay and into the air outside, betwenen the fender and the engine compartment.

My questions are:

1. if these intake tubes go outside the "hot" air in the engine compartment, why do aftermarket intakes base their claims on the colder air they use simply by partitioning off the engine bay?

2. The Z71 package includes a "high capacity air cleaner".  what is this and how is it different from a stock air box? (they take the same filter size)

Thanks

Question 1:  If you look at the size of the airbox intake tubes they are restricted.  If you look at the the tube from the air box to the intake, it is a jumbled mess.  There is no way air could pass smoothly through it.

I had an FIPK on my '00 before I traded the truck (I just sold it to StepsideZ) and I could feel the difference in temp between the engine compartment and the heat shielded area.  The cool air enters the "new" air compartment through the same areas but it is unrestricted, thus a "cold air box".  The FIPK also has a smooth intake tube attached to a large cone K&N filter allowing the air to flow quickly to the intake and combustion chamber.  Have you noticed how your truck runs better on cool mornings?  Now you have that feeling all the time...

Question 2: I've wondered this myself because it is only a $25 option on any other truck... so it can't be much.  I have it on my HD and it comes as part of the trailering package.

I hope this helps a little...

My guess on the High Capacity Air Cleaner is the filter has more filter surface or thicker.  Width and length should be the same though.  Just a guess though.

XSaNiTy, does your truck have that "high cap. air cleaner" option?  I've never paid attention to other trucks, but do the ones without the option have the 2 tubes that run from the fender to the filter box?  I would guess (again  :D  ) that they do.

Yeah i had the high cap. air claner option, but it seems that its probably sitting in my garage right now seeing as i replaced it with a K&N. i kinda wish i had gotten more for the $25 option, but maybe its something else entirely

How much bigger is the filter that comes with the FIPK then the stock filter?  I'm guessing the stock filter is a flat filter that just sits in the airbox, correct?  If so, it would be a huge improvement just to get a bigger airfilter on one of those trucks, not to mention the smoother airflow.

Shanners is correct there is temp difference. Also the power is definately improved. I have only driven about 50 miles with this thing and I don't think I would go back.
