Factory DVD Installation

I have a '04 CC SB Silverado and I have a chance to pickup a factory DVD player with brackets for a good price. My question is how hard would this be to install, is the wiring bundle already up there? Would the brackets just bolt up? Has anyone done this on their truck??

Thanks

Something tells me GM would not be nice enough to leave a harness up there for later add-ons.

Here are some photos that might help with your install. This is for the side-by-side DVD player (sunroof).

Roof cutouts in the headliner. There are three Phillips screws that need to be loosened. They are captured screws that fit into captured nuts in the roof bracket. The entire assembly slides in from the drivers side to the passenger side - neat and simple. One harness runs down the passenger side B pillar.

DVD and screen assembly from the roof's side.

Take photos of your project so other can see what you finally ended up doing. And of course, enjoy this nice luxury. Helps keep my kids happy during long drives.

As far as "grafting" in the wiring goes, you should get the harness if they have that too.

As far as programming goes, you don't usually have to for accessory item connectivity unless it's XM (for that module itself). The system should "see" it when you power up.

Keep the power connection the same as factory. There are instructions for certain module programming that mention the removal of the RSE's fuse, in order to program those modules. If your connection point is different, they would pull an unused fuse or skip it if none, only to corrupt one or more modules. (Fuse removal is per GM documents). Simply because it was still powered from another point.

To tap into the audio bus properly, you will need to remove the dash top. Access the shorting block, SP250 (usually above the glove box) and tap in next to where an XM tuner and/or an external CD-Changer would. Or, just reach behind the HU and tap the harness wires.

It should be the same between the YXL and the Suburban. The photos above are from a sun-roof equipped vehicle. Not so sure about the SLE or LS trim lines.

I'm pretty sure the roof bracket is in there as part of the main roof assembly. You'd probably want to double check on the 3 speednuts that fit in the roof bracket. Those screws and the two tabs on the passenger's side are the only things that hold the DVD assy up there.

Is there any additional bracing in the sunroof models with DVD then the ones without DVD and sunroof. I have a 03 Yukon with sunroof and would like to add a OEM DVD. A friend of mine has a 04 Tahoe LT with Sunroof and DVD and his Headliner seems more secure, hardly any movement compared to mine.

I think the sunroof equipped roof is braced to reinforce it. It is after all a big hole in the roof. I read somewhere that this is why snow-plow ready trucks did not come with sunroofs - something to do with roof/body strength.

That being said, the sunroof opening itself is an additional "mount" to hold up the headliner. So this might be why the headliner seems stiffer.

I was wondering though if the DVD models with sunroofs have extra bracing. I have a factory sunroof and I can see there is not much up there to support a DVD.My friends LT with sunroof and DVD seems alot more solid.I`m going to see if he will let me get a closer look @ the headliner. Some where I read that there is different headliners. One with DVD and sunroof and one with just sunroof.Does anyone know if the if there is a factory harness available? Has anyone put a factory DVD in a nonfactory equipped truck?

If you go into a Chevy dealership, somewhere in the showroom you'll see a display of aftermarket TVs and DVD units by Audiovox, Moviestogo, and maybe others. If you're looking at purchasing a vehicle that is not equipped with the DVD entertainment system and you'd like them to add the factory OEM system because they don't have the truck you want on the lot with that feature, they will sell you on one of the aftermarket units. They will say that these units are better because they have a larger screen, etc. (which really is true but sometimes you just want the factory look)

Well, they may get into this or they may not; most of the salespeople have no idea what is involved and in my experience, the parts guys don't even have a sufficient understanding of this. Fortunately for me, the parts guys put me on the phone with the dealership's own employee who installs this equipment in their trucks that don't already have it.

What he explained to me was that he had had several guys like me wanting to do this same thing and that the overwhelming conclusion was that it was prohibitively expensive to do so. First of all, the factory headliner (and I'm speeking of the Suburban/Tahoe with sunroof and mine is an '04) is completely different in that the vehicles with factory entertainment system have one part of the bracket assembly for the TV/DVD actually made onto the headliner itself. Besides that there is also another component of the bracket system that is installed first and then mates up to the piece on the headliner. Finally, there is the wiring harness.

Now, I would assume that all of these items can be purchased from the dealer. If one was lucky, perhaps you could strip all of this from a totalled car and make it happen. That not being the case with me, I gladly went a different route once I found that this headliner with the bracketing attached would alone run around $700.

After considering this expense in addition to the cost of the other parts as well as the $250 I'd already spent on the actual unit (which was cheap) and finally installation, because I wasn't crazy about ripping into my brand new truck and trying this myself, I found it very easy and perfectly logical to scrap my hangup with having a factory looking system and opted to have a beautiful 10" Audiovox screen installed complete with TV tuner, Moviestogo DVD, wireless headphones, the works!! It's also nice to know that if the 10" screen (which seems a tremendous amount larger than the little 7" in the factory unit) or anything else in the setup should need replacing or upgrading at some point...no problem; if I want to add screens or install an xbox or anything else...no problem, my unit is made for expansion and just waiting to have other components added. Not so with the factory unit. Besides, the holes in the headliner on that piece extend to nearly the full length of that unit which already sits disproportionately to the passenger side. As far as I can see, it would be virtually impossible to replace that unit with anything else because whatever you put in it's place would not cover all the openings.

OK, sorry for such a long post but I searched and searched for a difinitive answer to this question before I purchased the factory unit. In the absence of any extensive information, I puchased anyway thinking "it has to possible, and probably pretty easy". I also thought, "everything is probably just sitting there above the headliner ready for me to just hook it up." Um, not quite.

Finally, please understand that I'm not implying that some of you geniuses and artists out there (and I'm not being sarcastic, I mean that sincerely) can't make this work beautifully even without factory parts. But to me, whether the differences are invisible above the headliner or not, if it's not factory, it's not factory; so if you can't have it factory, install something better than factory.

I finally got it all up and running.Factory OEM TNR nav with 6 disc slot loading changer and OEM RSE (DVD Player) It was not as bad I thought if anybody is interested I can give out the part numbers it just requires Radio(Nav), Changer,DVD, Harness, and Headliner. Or you can add the RSE to existing system.

Shoot me a PM on what you had to do to install the DVD player.

Anyone determine if the harness for the player is up in the roof?

Thanks

jpuckett - where did you go for the 10" Audiovox, and what was the cost for install? Im not concerned with factory look, like the larger screen by far.

Does someone have the actual pin-out schematic of wire colors and their placement on both the DVD end of the unit and on the "C2" connector on the back of the HU? I am planning on installing this in my truck, but not on the roof. I am going to relocate the DVD player someplace else as well as the screen (if i even use the factory screen at all). But i want it to all interface on my HU like factory, which should be no problem if i have the right schematic/pin-out. There is another thread here showing what the wire colors coming off the DVD harness represent, but if i have no harness or i want to build my own harness from scratch, i will need some more detail. Does anyone have a part number for the harness, or a part number for the 12 and 24 pin connectors and pins so i could just build the harness?
