Tailgate won't open???

99 2500LD/ 58k miles

Washed the truck today and swept out the bed. Closed the tailgate no problems. Came back a couple hours later, the handle pulls and makes a click like normal but doesn't disengage.

I have a GMPP so its off to Chevy on Monday. I just thought that was so strange.

Glad it didn't happen on Friday at the trail head as I would not have been able to unload the dirt bikes!!! My Ford bros would have rode me like a step child.

The tail gate mechanism is a steel rod stuck into a hole of a flat plate of steel. It is held in by a cheap plastic tab. Let me reiterate "cheap!" Mine broke on me, and is probably the problem with yours. You have to break the plastic cover around the handle out, there is no way to remove without breaking it seems, great design. Then you can get to the plastic tab and replace. Luckily both pieces are like $7 each, if you want to do it yourself.
