Tailgate Cables...AGAIN

I know this subject is a dead horse, and sorry, but I need a whack at it. I have an '02 1500HD and just the other day I leaned on the tailgate while it was down and I heard a snap from the pass. side cable. My question is, is this the problem with the recall (braking) and how do I know if mine have already been changed? They dont look worn at all, but then the truck isnt all that old. What steps do I need to take to get them replaced, as I bought this truck used with no warranty (if that applies). Thanks for your input.

The recall is to remedy the cable's snapping, just like you said happened to you. I guess your best bet would be to call the dealer and explain what happened. To the best of my knowledge, the recall encompasses all trucks 2000 and up. (not mine, sigh) You wont notice any wear on the cable, I believe that it rusts internally, under the protective cover.

Yes, water sneaks in under the jacket and eats the galvanized cables internally. Check with the dealer, they'll run your VIN to see if this has been changed or not. Heck, they might just give you a set either way!

Even if they were already replaced, they have to give him another new set because they carry 12 month warranty, new cables have not been out that long.

You can tell if you have the new design cables by looking at the end that attaches to the tailgate. If the exposed end of the eyelet (where it is crimped to the cable) is filled with a clear sealer, it is of the old design.

 

Haven't seen any of the new ones break so it's highly unlikely you have the new cables. The recall covers replacement regardless of whether you are the first or tenth owner of the vehicle.

Got my check today from GM, sent the recept to GM with a claim form

I replaced mine on my 02, it was covered under warranty, waiting 4hr for them to do it was crazy, for $15.00 and 10min later it was done

 

I lost one of the recepts and GM didn't pay that one, SO with this said save all your recepts even if it small, there might be a recall on it, and GM will pay for it.

 

They will also pay for any labor you paid to have it fixed

The recall states that any damaged tailgate hinges or trunions

will be replaced at the same time that the new stainless cables

are installed. Buddy brought his '01 by the other day complaining

of a bind in the tailgate. I opened up the tailgate to find a bent hinge

on the right side, and brand new stainless cables from the dealer with a tag

on them, Made in China! WTFIUWT?

Yep! Chinese stainless cables...

 

Look for a campaign sticker on the radiator cover. Usually white. They stuck one there when they did mine... I don't like sticker's on my truck!

Our dealer was nice. They were pretty booked, so he asked if I'd mind doing them. Said no problem and he handed my my nice new Chinese cables. Don't know If I trust them any more than the old ones, but whatever, they're free (and no sticker, don't know why they needed that).
