What could I expect from a new cat back exhaust?

Just curious what I could expect from a cat back exhaust other than a tougher sounding truck? I have a 2000 Silverado 2500 with a 6.0L. What would be better for performance? A "dual" or single system.

I don't believe I can do anything with the cat since it isn't older than 5 years yet. If I wait a little longer I could have a high flow cat installed too.

What could I expect with a high flow cat and performance muffler replacement?

Thanks friends

I just had a Magnaflow single in Dual out exhaust put on & a K&N filter and I only gained .030 of a second in the quarter mile consistently. I did alot of research and found out that Magnaflow and borla are the best for performance gains. I love the sound of my Magnaflow, not too loud, but very aggressive!

I bought mine from MRT for $499.99 shipped. Try there. Hope that helps....

Oh by the way that was on my 04 5.3 rcsb so you might gain more with your 6.0.

 What to expect.....a couple of hundred bucks less in the bank account and a mean sound....maybe a slight HP increase too...

You might get a small power increase, depending on the system you'll more than likely gain more top end. I'm convinced that I gained power with my Gibson dual set-up, but I also started driving it differently after the install...keep my foot in it alot more. I did the cat back and the shorty headers at the same time, 3 years ago.

As far as the high flow cats go, I really don't believe that they're worth the money. The factory cats aren't that bad, and, from what I've read, you probably won't even notice a difference with the high flows.

My exhaust guy told me that the stock cats are high flow, I put a single in dual out Flowmaster, it sounds great. Remember, if you change the exhaust, you need to change the intake somehow. An engine is nothing more than a big air pump, if you allow more air out, you must have a plan to replace it. I added the K&N filter, and now I am working on a plan to increase the airflow more with some sort of cold air intake system. Hope this helped.

You can usually expect about a 10hp gain from replacing the stock exhaust. Some systems flow better than others though. I've had some customers tell me that they have used some "lower end" systems and their truck sounded more powerful but they actually didn't get much if anything out of it. The exhaust can be more restrictive as you do other modifications.

Between my exhaust and better air I picked up 6/10's and 3 mph in the 1/4 mile. That's about 25 hp when you plug that information into a HP calculater . I think roughly half of that gain is from the exhaust. So, my 5.3 picked up about 12.5 hp.

I purchase a MagnaFlow muffler (P/N #12198) and had installed too, dual in, single out. It definitely sounds better. I didn't feel any noticeable power gains, but I haven't real opened it up either. Now it sounds like a real truck. The CSK was louder than the exhaust. Now maybe the exhaust will drowned it out. :troll:

Thanks for all of the input..

With a Flowmaster 50 Series, one in - two out you'll lose low end AND mpg. I had my Flowmaster taken off and the stock reinstalled. The Flowmaster was a horrible modification. I loved them on my TBI trucks but are terrible on the 5.3l Vortec.
