Is a noisy fuel pump a sign of impendind failure?

Talked to local mechanic and he said yes, it usually means the pump is working harder. But he also said that he has installed some new ones that were fairly loud. Filter was replaced about 1k miles ago. Heading west snowmobiling so I am little nervous. Wondering if I should just replace it?

The GM fuel pumps do have a tendency to be fairly loud. I've known people who's pumps have gotten louder as time goes on and remained that way for over 3 years without problem. On the other side of the coin, I've also seen quiet pumps fail without notice, and I've seen pumps get louder and fail. If it continues to get progressively louder and louder, you might want to take the safe route and have it replaced. If you have high mileage, I'd be more concerned, if the mileage is low, I'd ride it out and keep my AAA card in my wallet just in case.

It also helps to not let your gas tank get below 1/4 full. The gas in the tank helps keep the pump cool, at least that's what I was told. They're notorious for failing at around 100K miles.

Mine has been pretty loud for about a year now with no problems yet. I have almost 60K miles on it now. I'm just waiting for it to die at some point. :chevy:

But I also try not to let the tank get much below 1/4, since the pump is in the tank and the fuel does act as a coolant for it.

We have alot in common.... Almost the exact same truck with the exact same miles and the exact loud fuel pump. Mine has just gotten loud recently with teh cold nsap we have been having. I have a bad tendency or running my to the low fuel light everytime to see how many miles I can get on tank. :chevy:

GM Tech gave a good option, if it fails, Give the bottom of the tank a hard wack.  This may be a good thing to keep in mind while out.

Worked for me, got me home where I could fix it the right way.

My fuel pump quit at 30K miles with no noise or warning. I parked it at work and she wouldn't start 3 hours later. It was about 20 degrees that day, but I doubt that was the reason.

I called GM and they hauled her off on a flat bed. The pump was replaced under warranty. The service writer said it was a common problem. He was on his third pump in a 99' Yukon. He also said it was about $650 if you have to pay for it, so I'm hoping I have better luck with number two.
