Torque Converter locking/unlocking

Hello all! I have a 92 2500 4x4 with 454 and 4l80E. 120k miles. My problem is when im either 3rd or 4th gear and the converter starts to lock up, it disengages so that the truck rev's up and down a couple hundred rpm's untill I lift off the throttle. The trans shifts fine thru out all the other gears and I notice nothing out of the ordinary with anything else. Is this something "simple" like the electronics or is my trans in the begining stages of complete meltdown. Everything is stock and has not been rebuilt. I know i have a lot of miles so its probably about time for a new trans, but i was hoping to make a few more thousand miles so i can save up some $$$

Another thing I have bugs with is my Cruise control. It does not work. I checked fuses, wires(that i can see), and took the cover off of the control box in the engine compartment to see if everything is still conected. Is it the stalk on the steering column? I think this because my squiter switch for windsheild wipers doesn't work either, and its on the stalk also.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had a 91 3/4 ton Suburban with a 4L80E trans that used to slip out of gear. I took it in to the dealer and they had a notice from GM that one of the sensors in the tranny was defective. This problem started at about 60,000 miles. I took it to the dealer and after the sensor was replaced it worked fine and then it blew out the reverse band at about 105K because these trannys apparently were built with a weak reverse/1st gear. Your tranny just could be worn out as well, but if I got 120K on my tranny with no problems I'd be happy. If you go to a trans shop for repairs make sure they have all the GM updates for your tranny. Hope this helps :smash:

Thanks for the info, I had to finally take it into the shop. They said the wiring harness inside the trans was old and cracked and a band was badly burnt with some other clutches and springs. It was time for a rebuild! Otherwise everything else was in good shape, and they have updates for it also. :smash:
