2002 GMC Z71 Front Differential Noise

Recommended Posts

I have a 02 Z71 Ext Cab (50K miles) that seems to have a noticeable gear whine or growl when you engage the 4WD (auto or 4Hi).

The 4WD works fine, it just is noisy.

I would think nothing of it except for the fact that my 02 Z71 Tahoe (30K miles) does not make this same noise in 4WD and it is the exact same system.

No fluid leaks are detected as the diff is dry on the outside with no oil residue.

Any thoughts?

I know the front diff does not use synthetic gear lube from the factory (only the rear) and it is very cold where I am at. However if it were oil related I would assume bothof my trucks to make the same noise??

I will check transfer case and diff fluid levels. No sign of leaking on either but still worth checking.

Could be a u-joint, I will keep an eye on them for vibration.

One thing I did notice is the diff and skid plate is packed with snow and Ice so the diff noise could be resonating through the skid plate and frame. I will thaw it out and see if it goes away.

thank you for the suggestions.
