Tips for removing spark plug wires?

Recommended Posts

I posted this in another forum, but I want to cover my bases, so here we go. Has anyone else had trouble removing their spark plug wires? I purchased some upgrade wires for my 01 Sierra and I cannot completely remove the stock wires. I am able to remove the wire from the coil, but I am not able to remove the wire from the plug. Is it necessary to remove the heat shields that are around the plug boot? Any help that anyone may be able to give would be appreciated.

A boot puller is always helpful, and try twisting the boots to help break them loose before tugging on them. When you install the new ones, use a little dialectic grease and you should be fine the next time around.

I used a long flat head screwdriver to "CAREFULLY" loosen it up. I couldn't get the darn things off either, but sticking a screw driver in there and prying it made em pop right off.....I was really carefull to to do it to hard though, as I didn't want to break the spark plug.

I can't imagine them being as hard as they are on my car. I just grabbed them the best I could and pulled crossing my fingers I didn't pull it apart, not a one pulled apart.

For my 2000, I bought a cheapo boot puller, and got 6 of the 8 off, before the puller was ruined... the boots felt loose, they would twist and wiggle, just NOT COME OFF!

I left the last 2 alone (the plugs looked fine after 160,000 miles :banghead: )
