Could be the 4WD selector switch, they have had many of those do that. mine was doing the same thing and they replaced the switch under warranty.

Use the search feature for service 4WD light. It's very common and most usually fixed with a new switch on the dash. There should be part #'s listed in these old posts. I replaced my Brother in laws, ordered it from PartsZoneonline (much cheaper than local dealer, by half), vendor on the left side of the page. Took about 5 minutes to get the old one out and new one in. Simple unplug and plug new one in. Pop off the dash trim (piece that goes around radio all the way over to the 4x4 switch) Easy access now to the switch. Good luck, Chris

I had the same problem with my '99 Silverado(135K). First the Service 4WD light would come on and off. Then the switch would work sometimes (usually not when i needed it). So i thought the switch would do the trick( I wish i found out about the place that sells them other then the dealer because it was around 60 bucks).....Worked for about a day then the Service 4WD light came on and stayed on. I reluctantly took it to the dealer to get the codes read. The code came up as a bad encoder motor. Its a little electric motor that shifts the transfer case from 2WD high to 4 WD etc... I got that from a place called Drivetrain Specialists out in Las Vegas. It was $200. The dealer wanted $550??

I have also seen guys have trouble with the Transfer Case control module. That is located under the dash. I am not sure how much they are.

I hope this helps....

2004 Yukon. T-case module just went out this morning, luckily right after we received 6" of snow. Yea. If it wasn't for bad luck, wouldn't have any at all... 4000 miles covered under warranty. Lovin the Buick LeSabre. :banghead:
