Want to put bigger tires on my Yukon XL.

Hi! I have a 2001 GMC Yukon XL Heavy Duty 4x4. Right now it has little 245/75-16 tires on it (stock size), probably to facilitate towing. I would like to put 31" or 32" (or maybe bigger) tires on it to facilitate mild off roading. Now, I also do quite a bit of traveling, too. Like trips to Disneyworld or Pensacola (8 hours) every 2-3 months.

I really enjoy the way the truck drives right now. Is it a bad idea to switch to mild off road tires with the traveling I do? What mild off road tires would you recommend? I will do mostly dirt trails here on Fort Gordon.

Also, if I go to bigger tires what problems will I have other that my speedomter being off? My wheelwells are big and will easily accomodate bigger tires. I'm more worried about the transmission shift points being off and stuff like that. I think I can buy a Hypertech Power Programmer and it will fix the speedometer and shift points. Anyone done that?

Thanks!

yes the hypertech will fix your speedo and your shift points, about what tire will fit I don't know. I have a 2500 HD instead of the sub. but 285 75 r16 AT's fit fine there. Good luck

i moved up to 285's on my tahoe and it actually made my speedo more accurate.

the only down side is i can feel it struggle a bit pulling a trailer up hill but not noticeable on the street. a re-gear will fix that though.

my friend got the hyper tech. and it does NOT have as many options as my supperchips programer. the superchips has a tow mode that is killer. i use it when i tow (a trailer with a full cage baja aprox.3000 lbs) no problems . i've had trucks for about 10 years and think that bfg AT'S are the best for on and off road .dont go mudders unless you want to have to rotate the tires every oil change(to keep the noise down) P.s. my tire size is 295 75 16 (33.75)

I was once told that the newer GM speedo's are about 6% higher than actual speed. Makes me wonder if the odometer is showing 6% more miles than actual.

Any techs know if this is true and if it does affect the true mileage?
