PF44 or PF46

Ok, went to go do my first oil change, for some reason, the reference books at the store called for a PF-46 filter. When I pulled mine off my truck, it was a PF-44. I guess I should have read the manual, but, figured the reference book would be correct, I'm starting to wonder!

 

Since I didn't have another filter, I installed the PF-46.

 

My question is: will this filter be sufficient or do I need to use a PF-44 before I go and make my morning commute?

 

I have a 2004 X-cab Sierra, 5.3L

All brands i checked cross reference to a PF46. Unfortunately, my AC DELCO filter catalog is from 2002 and doesn't have the PF46 listed. I can tell you that the PF44 has an inside diameter of 13/16-16 and a height of 3.35, with an anti-drain valve. I cross checked 5 brands from 2 retailers. It is very unlikely there is an error in the listing. You should be good.

If you do a search at the AC Delco site for your truck you'll see the PF46 is the correct part. I was wondering the same thing when I bought a filter this past weekend. (PF44 wasn't even on the shelf) I wound up buying the Purolator Pure One instead, but I guess GM has just changed something and updated with the PF46. You should be good to go.

That's what I use on the '04 Tahoe also. More filter area is better in my book.

we run a PF59 on my 2001 and my dad's 2003, a PF52 on the '97 5.7L

Another PF-59 user here...I like the extra capacity. They also make a UPF-46 which is a more expensive performance version of the PF-46. They used to make a UPF-59 which is what I used to use until they stopped making it.

Not that I have a problem with bigger filters just remember the oil life monitor(i don't go by) is calibrated for the smaller filter. If you use it it would be wrong but on the good side of wrong.

Thanks for the info. Even after viewing the AC Delco site, I was still unsure.

 

Thought I was going to have to get an impact wrench to remove the filter!! That sucker was really on there!

The oil life monitor is not calibrated for any filter,It doesn't know what filter is on your truck,It goes by your driving habits as far as stop and go driving or highway driving.

I don't use it anyway,My oil & filter gets changed every 3,000 miles.

Ask any programer to set you up a program to monitor your oil life but don't tell him how much oil or the capacity of the oil filter. Think it'll work?

I hear you - the factory really monkey-wrenches that filter on there. The shorter filters are impossible to get a filter wrench on when it is on that freakin' tight. I like the PF-59 because it is long enough to get a grip on it.
