Half Ton Crew Cab

Currently driving a 1500HD 4x4 (3.73:1, 6.0L)

I pull quite often, a 4000lb boat.

Looking at buying the new half ton crew. I may be able to live with the shortenend box, but am concerned about the 5.3L/3.42:1 combination

Who here has a half ton crew and has towed with it?

Thanks

You will hate towing with the 1/2 ton after having the 1500HD.

Not sure if you know this, but GM is again making the 1500HD in 2005. So you can get the same rig all over again, with the 6.0 (and a 4.10 rear).

Ya, at first I was told that they were not making 1500HD anymore, but then some dealers began to find a few... Apparently they are very hard to come by right now?

The 1500HD became the 2500 nonHD or LD for 2004. Now they're back to 1500HD which is exactly the same thing. Who does Chevy's marketing?

I have the 1/3 ton crew 4x4 and tow about 7000 pounds. It does ok, about 9 MPG. Hills are about 45-55, if you tow at 55 youll be fine. Just realize that its not a rocket ship!

I tow a 5000lb sled?Atv trailer in the Mountains with my 05 1/2 Crew with 4.10s.It tows good but don't go 3.42s you'll be hating it.I spent 2 years towing with a 1500 ram Hemi with 3.92s.Now that I have a HyperTech tuner I'd rather tow with the Silverado.

you sure yours is a "half ton crew" or is it a 1500hd?

BTW, I passed on the half ton crew as my salesman finally found me an 05 1500hd 6.0 3.73 so I am happy to be driving the same truck/ new smell and grille!

What would you rather drive...1500 Heavy Duty or a 2500 Light Duty? To be a MAN I want the HD....

BUT to get back to the point. If available for the 1500 Crew, get the 4:10 rear gear. This makes all the difference. The 3:73 is O.K. for towing light load but the 4:10 is best for all around towing.

I have the '02 GMC Sierra 1500HD Crew Cab with the 6.0 and 4.10 rear (I believe it is the first year they built that model). I have towed a 5500 lb boat on several occasions without a problem. I have towed a 30 ft travel trailer, 350 miles one way(? lbs) no problem. The fuel mileage is tolerable around 9-11 mpg and I have plenty of torque to get the whole rig moving from a traffic light, boat ramp or hunting camp. I don't know if I would have the same confidence with a 3.73 or lower (higher) gear ratio. Also, if you plan on adding larger tires later, you your gear ratio won't suffer as much.
