Axle Seals

Hey guys,

I am curious as to how hard it is to replace the axle seals??? I have an aftermarket warranty that has a $100 deductable, should I just have the dealer do it or can I do this myself. The only reason I don't want to do it is because I am a college student and am currently being sunk deeper and deeper into debt every day. , so to save 100 bucks would be nice, if they're not a real pain. I did a search on this and it sounded like it wasn't that hard just time consuming???

Any thoughts???

just pay the hundred $. The parts would be about 40$ assuming you need new brake shoes.

Not hard at all if you have a few tools and some jackstands.

Well I got the tools, just have to find the time. Guess I'll have to talk to the stealer and if they can FIND somethin to replace then maybe I'll have them do it

I just got done doing this because I wanted to replace the rear backing plates that were rusted to pieces. Having done it, I would not hesitate to do it again. The first side took me 3 times as long as the second side.

Readers digest version. I have the G80 locker.

Remove calipers and rotors.

Mark axle to note position on the backing plate.

Drain and remove rear diff cover.

Remove pin locking bolt. Slide wrist pin about 2/3 out and rotate so pin contacts case.

Push axle in about 1/2 inch to reveal locking key. Remove.

Carefully slide axle out. Remove seal. I used seal puller and screwdriver.

Install new seal . I used 2x4 and rubber mallet.

Carefully insert axle noting mark to keep it in original position.

Slide locking pin over end of axle and pull axle to seat locking key.

Repeat for other side.

Took me about an hour. If you think an hour of your time is worth $100, have it done. If you enjoy working on your truck, have at it

haha, actually the tech said that both axle seals are leaking. not sure if that meant both drivers side and passangers or the front and rear?

I just ran into the tech and he said that the front two are leaking. I would assume it's pretttttyy much the same idea as the rear though right?? Probably not haha...
