Looking for some input...

Looking at getting some new speakers for this truck. I was happy with the Sony Xplods (coming from a blown speaker, who wouldn't be?), but I'm thinking about something else. I'm leaning towards Rockford Fosgate FRC4306 3-ways for the front doors and Polk GXR46 2-ways for the pillars. Anybody have experience with these, or other recommendations?

Fosgate and Polk are both (generally) better speakers than the Xplods, so you should be happy with either of them.

Speaker sound is very subjective to the listener, so everybody has their favorites.

Personally I like MB Quart, but they run a little expensive for most folks. But it's worth the extra money to me.

Boston Acoustic makes some great speakers, as does Infinity.

Do you have an amplifier?

I was thinking about adding powered sub w/enclosure, specifically an Infinity Basslink sometime down the road. It says it has speaker inputs, does this allow the subs amp to power the speakers as well? I'm a newbie to the sound system mods :chevy:

If this indeed boosts the speakers when connected, should I consider other brands? The Basslink is rated at 200 watts, while the speakers are rated at 100 watts max. Don't need to blow them out, should I stick with the stock HU powering the speakers instead :D

The speaker inputs are for connecting speaker wires to the input of the amp so it gets the audio signal from those instead of from RCA outputs.

The build-in amp will not power anything else, just the sub.

Yeah...What ^^he^^ said. :chevy:

And you can power aftermarket speakers with the stock head unit, and they will sound just fine.

But if you don't plan on adding an amp to them later, don't spend a ton on the speakers.

I would say, don't spend more than $100 on 4x6's, or more than $275 on components. There are a lot out there that are cheaper than that, and will serve you well.

If you spend more than that, you will not be able to tell the difference without an amp on them...Some of the higher end ones will actually sound horrible without one.

I am of course, talking about the mids and tweets, not the sub.

I am also not an expert...Just a hobbyist. :D

I like the sound of CDT's. Very naturally accurate is the best way I can describe it. I have a set of their ol' HD-642 3way componets in my 97Tahoe; and I get compliments from home audio buffs. I picked these speakers up about 2 years ago for around $350; and considering they retailed nearly $800 at the time I got a sweet deal. Look at thezeb.com They have a set of CDT CL-61's for sale at a dang good price. They are a 6.5" component set and I'm not sure if it's a .75" or 1" silk tweeters it comes with. From my experience w/car audio they are on a level above MB Quart and Boston Acoustics and almost par w/DynAudio. CDT has never failed to impress me.

I put Pioneer three ways in an Explorer a few years back and was very surprised at the sound quality (it started out a strictly budget decision).

But

I'm with Wingnut, you will not be unhappy if you invest in MB Quart. Do a little research and then go to ebay. Buy the low end ones if ou are not going to "amp-up" and the mid to high end ones if you are. Match the speaker quality to the amp size.

Use components and mount the tweeter separately. A little research here will help you determine where.

You will not need to be an audiophile to do this and you will not believe the difference in sound quality even with the stock head.

:wtf:

squeaking past wingnut's $100 limit on 4x6's, you can pick up a pair of Boston Acoustic 4x6 plates (model 746) for $125. They have a 4" woofer w/ a freakin huge magnet and a 1" tweeter w/ ferro-fluid cooled voice coil. I had a set and ran them for over 4 years and they are like ear candy! The only reason I got rid of them is the surround on the woofer broke up (were made out of spongey foam and they dry rotted).

I have another pair I just bought from Tweeter (was Now Audio/Video), for $125 out the door. I haven't had a chance to install them just yet, might get to them this weekend. They are not flashy, they don't come w/ cheap speaker wire or anything, it's just the speakers in the box, but trust me, once you put power to them, you will love them! and so will your passengers!!

I also have a set of Boston Acoustic FS60 6.5" component speakers that I'll be putting in my front doors as well. I bought them last year, (also from Now, right before they switched to Tweeter and had them in my ext cab s-100), can't remember what I spent, but a friend of mine that has high dollar mb quartz stuff and macintosh amps drools over them. :wtf: was powering them w/ an ancient kenwood kac-821 amp that is 75wx2 rms.

I'll be powering the high end w/ a Infinity 7540a which is 111w x 4 rms. I haven't even had a chance to pull that out of the box, but circuit city was having a killer sale on them and I had to get it. it seems to get good reviews whereever I look. I have my own thread started about a 00 ext cab speaker box, I'll be updating it as soon as I get a chance to install everything if you are interested in my final opinion on any of the speakers.

Good luck!

Crystal mobile sound CPE60S $80 delivered from a place on ebay. 6.5" component set with .75" silk dome tweeter and decent 2way second order crossovers. Very nice sound if not pushed to hard. I'm sending them nothing below 80 hz and have them hooked to a 70 w/ch mtx amp. They have a more expencive line of components also that look to be of very good quality! Check out Crystal mobile sound
