Factory radio question

Recommended Posts

I've got a 1999 Sierra Ext. Cab (New body style) with a stock radio w/single in-dash CD player. I need to know if the stock factory radio has RCA jacks for the AUX input on the back or if I need to buy one of those really expensive AUX input jacks.

Any help would be appreciated.

Also, anyone have any photos of how to take off the side panel on the NON-door side in the rear?

You can go to Radio Shack and get a speaker output to RCA putput converter box. They are not expensive. I have the same setup in my '99 Silverado. I just used the front speaker wires and left the back speakers hooked to the head unit. Hope this helps.

I was debating about going the route of getting a Line Lever Converter like you, that's what the expensive rca jack thingy is called. ;) All the converter does is take the speaker outputs of your factory radio that are about 5-6volts and attentuates them (drops the voltage) down to 1-3 volts so you won't blow the rca input on your amp.

If you get one, I would suggest getting a stinger or some name brand converter and get the one that does not have the adjustable speaker levels. They usually just end up getting you confused and over time will stop working.

go to this page: http://www.installer.com/hilo/

and look for this one: SLOC

You don't necessarily have to buy that one from that website, just giving you an idea of what to look for. That's all ya need unless you are installing more than one amp.

good luck!

Thanks Hotwire, this was the info I was looking for. Installing a SIRIUS plug and play unit and was wanting to go directly into the head unit.

Ok, I have determined that I need the GM9-AUX adapter. Now, a couple of more questions.

I have the in-dash unit with a single CD player IN the headunit. To switch between Radio and CD, I currently hit the CD/AUX button to start the CD player. If I use the 9-Pin AUX adapter, will my CD player no longer be accessible? or, will the CD/AUX button switch between the CD and AUX unit each time I hit it.

Thanks in advance for helping this noob out.

sorry for the delayed response, I'm pretty sure the button will toggle when you have a cd in the player and sirius powered up, just like toggling between am/fm.

good luck!!

any update on this? I completely misread your original post asking about the input and just realized it, sorry. I'm in the market to hookup an aux input on my stereo as well, really tired of the fm modulator.

The GM9-AUX aren't too expensive...like $60 or so. The aux input adapter tricks the headunit into thinking there is a CD changer hooked up. So when you hit the CD/AUX button on the headunit, it toggles between CD - CD changer - radio. There is another post here that I put a schematic up...Clicky.

It should work on 99-02 models...GM9-AUX
