What would you give for this Classic?

Been looking for a 71-72 Chevy 4x4 for a while. My secretary's husband works with guy who has the following truck:

1972 Chevy K20 3/4 ton 4x4

350 V8

4 speed manual

AC (but no condencer)

in dash Tach

tilt

Power steering

Power disk brakes

wood bed

Pretty clean truck rust wise. I was not able to get in cab, but crawled around underneath. Some bondo on cab supports and one cab corner is bad. But rockers look original (or very good repair job). You can see the other rust in this pic.

He said he is not trying to sell the truck, but if someone came along and offered him, say $3,500 he would take it. Do not believe the plow comes with truck. I'm told the truck was restored 15 years ago. Lately it sits in his machine shed during summers and is used only in winters to plow the small parking lot at his business (15 spaces).

Here is a pic. Let me know what you think.

Try baiting him with a $2500 offer and see if he is willing to lower his bar a bit. Otherwise, 3.5k sounds a bit high for the "problems" it has now.

Without knowing the condition of the motor, tranny, etc., I wouldn't go over 2k.

How long has it been a plow truck?

Plowing is hard on all the drivetrain and the chassis.

Drove truck today. Runs great for age. Had transmission and transfer case gone through and work done just month ago. both shift wonderfully.

Has not been a plow truck all it's life. Just past 5 years or so, and just for his small lot of 15 spaces or so.

Engine started right up (cold this morning, probably 30 degrees). Like I said, strong runner. Only problem I could tell was rear brakes. Sticky after stopped. That can be fixed.

Surface rust on truck, and rusted through floor board on driver's side. And one bad cab corner. Aside from that, very straight truck. He's willing to take blade off and come down to $3,000. I figure another $200-300 off for brakes.

Update: Talked to the guy who does much of the work on this guy's truck (local mechanic). Said brakes shouldn't be too much of an issue. Explained a few things and I'm comfy with his answers.

Secretary's husband who works for this guy said he had an offer on the truck yesterday for $3,200. He turned it down.

That said, I called and we talked price. I said "$3,500 with the blade...take off $500 for the blade, back to $3,000."

His reply: "no, when we first talked i said $3,500. That was for truck without blade."

We went back and forth for a while. He talked about the $3200 offer to me. At that point I felt it was time to pull the trigger and said okay to $3,500.

I would have loved to pay 3k, but I'm getting the truck I want (3/4 ton, 4x4, stick shift, 350 v8), and don't have to do any major swaping of tranny, axles, etc. Body and bed are in great shape compared to other trucks i've seen around (listen to me rationalize paying an extra 500 )

Bottom line is I'M STOKED! I'll be rolling around town in a 72 for a while...then tearing her down and building her back up!

Many thanks to all who gave me great feedback!

Thanks again, Daubs

I think you got a great deal on that truck. My first truck was a 72 Chevy K10 short bed. It has the exact same options as the truck you bought. I sold it to my brother for $3500 bucks. I still kick myself in the but everytime I see it. I was pretty spoiled. It was in the family since it was new and my father just stored it until I turned 16 and gave me the keys. I did not realize what I had until it was too late.

I guess some people on this board don't realize the classics that these trucks are. As far as collectors go they all claim that the 67-72 GM trucks have the best line of any bodystyle, and are their favorite pickups, hands down. The factory tach and tilt wheel are some of the rarest options offered on those pickups probably right behind the "Longhorn" edition.

Well anyways, smart purchase, IMHO. Helluva nice truck
