Cold air intake

My 04 Silverado LS, ECSB 4.8 w/magnaflow muff, seems to run better with the stock air box w/K&N. I had installed a Mac cold air intake w/heat sheld, it ran good but it seemed to take some power away, I reinstalled the factory air box set-up and ran alot better, it also sounds tight, the mac intake sounded loose very loud.

any ideas

I thought the same thing about my FIPK. I used it on my '02 5.3 and modified it to fit my '05. I wish I'd just left it alone and sold it because I ended up taking it back off and reinstalling the stock airbox. I believe that there is such a thing as too much cold air. The engine almost seemed to "labor" in the really cold temps. Not only that, I lost nearly 2 mpg by having it on there. Sometimes you've just gotta be honest with yourself and admit a bad purchase. FWIW. when I removed it from the '02 after about 18K miles, the intake tube was absolutely clean inside.........no dust, no dirt, nothing.

This intake was on my 02 same setup and ran like a scalded dog, it would run circles around this 04 I know TQM has a lot to do with it, this intake pulled it down so much it's not worth it. it was like night and day when i took it off

I've heard a couple folks have the same experience on stock engines...seems like it might take away from the low end performance. It really seemed to help me when I first installed it years ago, but that might also be due to the fact that I put my foot in it more after I installed it. Now that I have the cam and tuning I'm sure that it's definitely beneficial to me. Also helps that I have an exhaust system too I'm sure.

The aftermarket intakes are generally louder than the stock ones also...some like it, some don't.

When i made my own cold air intake it made my tahoe run like crap. When you were on the highway and wanted to pass some one you would floor it and it would kick down and when it got to about 80MPH it was like the engine said "im tired" and bogged down. I put the stock air box back on with a K&N and it dosent do that any more. Now im hesitant to go buy a Volant Box, i dont wanna spend that kind of money on something thats not gonna work.

I have a Mac intake also. Doesn't seem to have hurt my performance. Gas mileage hasn't changed at all. Acceleration is quicker, though. I only have the air dam kit, so I still use the stock ducting from the mass air to throttle body. I don't know how much of a help or hinderance the factory ducting is. If I only had a dyno.............

Odd, I noticed nothing bad but only good coming from my K&N cold air intake. It sure would be nice to dyno it to be sure, oh wait, K&N did dyno it (unfortunately not mine but a 6.0L none the less) and it gained 13.8 HP!

As for passing dirt through a K&N, Ive never had any dirt (unless its microns in which it isnt goin to hurt anything any more than worn metal from the moving parts in the motor) get past mine with a properly oiled unit. Ive spent many many many a weekend in the dry and dusty SoCal deserts too.

This thing ran great on my 02 I noticed the power right away, but with this 04 with the electronic TB and TQM. The PCM controls everything. and from what I have read the TP will close if to much air is moving thru it
