Having a reverse sensor installed

I am having a reverse sensor (the ones that beep variably depending on the distance of the object behind you) installed tomorrow. It will have 3 sensors in the bumper, 1 in the middle and 2 as far out as possible.

The Dealer wanted $600 (2 sensors) or $900 (4 sensors). I have a aftermarket shop that will do the 3 sensors for $300 (they do all the installs for the Land Rover Dealer in town, and they have insurance)

 

Anyone have any comments, suggestions, warnings?

More sensors in theory is more better. But the real issue is corner sensitivity. If you have two on the edges and one in the center, then you are probably in good shape. Therefore, I'd have to say the 3 sensor deal sounds better if you have someone install it.

 

But before doing that, you should seriously consider doing it yourself. While I'm not going to profess that it is the most integrated looking pair of sensors, it was pretty cheap ($75 for the sensors). Two sensors work fine for backing up straight. It is vulnerable to the corners. So I have to watch that very carefully.

 

All of these sensors are prone to giving false alarms if the driveway is really steep compared to the road you are backing into. Careful alignment and placement on the bumper will minimize this.

How about a rear view camera? I had one added to my pioneer nav. system. I love it!!!
