Aftermarket Stereos

I have a 2002 Ext. Cab Silverados with onstar on it. I have a few questions about upgrades:

1. I was told (stereo retail place) that when replacing the deck with an aftermarket deck you have to still keep the original deck in the car some where, I this true??

2. Also I saw someone on this forum that has the JL Audio stealth box, does anyone now if this is available from a store online or mail order?

No. I'm no stereo guru, but I've never heard that before.

Did they mean you have to keep it in the truck just to have it available, or hooked up and working?

well you can keep your onstar with an adaptor thats pretty cheap, im not certain who makes it but someone here knows for sure. you dont need to keep the old headunit for this to work. JL is only one company who makes stealth boxes. Q-form and MTX also make nice ones and they all can be seen on crutchfield.com, sounddomain.com, and nexxon.com to name just a few. hope i helped

LOL. I missed the Onstar part. I thought you were just strictly talking about swapping the head units with no concern for the Onstar.

What I am looking to do is run an aftermarket deck and keep Onstar connected. They said that they would have to hide the original deck in the truck somewhere in order to leave the system working.....I couldn't believe you had to do this!!!

Does anyone know where to get an adapter like the one spoken of above??

I dont remember the name of the radio but there are post about it and you should be able to run on-star with an aftermarket stereo without haveing to hide the other unit.

I installed a Pioneer Premeir P-930 and I also kept my onstar. All you need is the Soundgate Starmod 2. I installed the receiver, cd changer, and the Onstar interface and it was very easy to do with the very detailed instructions that are included. Here is the website where I bought it, took about 8 days to get it and it cost $110. Starmod 2 Onstar Interface
