Windshield Washer Fluid leaking

2002 GMC Yukon:

My windshield washer fluid leaks out of the front drivers side corner after the reservoir is filled. drip, drip, drip until it's all gone.

Has anyone else had this problem?

I've heard some say that it's the pump and not the reservoir. Is this true? If so, where is the pump located, and what's the easiest way to get to it? I didn't know if I should take out the battery and go in from the top, or try to get to it from under the truck..

Thanks in advance.

I just finished fixing my wife's 45 min ago (98 Malibu).

Mind you I didn't fix it properly but its not leaking anymore.

From underneath the front of the car you can see the bottom of container.

This was in my case your could be different.

Anyway looking at the bottom of the container I could see a black cigar shape piece (pump?)tapped into the bottom of the container. To make this short I wiped/cleaned that off and noticed it was cracked.

There was no way in h3ll I was going to get the container out to fix it, this is why it was not fixed properly. I did try somewhat.

I had some good glue in caulking tube form. I just squeezed glue into the crack and a little around it. Waited a few hours and worked great...........so far....

I've seen both items leak on other manufacturers' vehicles, not sure what the common item is with our trucks though...could very well be the pump. If water froze inside of it, it might have expanded and cracked the pump casing. It looks like a fat black cigar like 04-silver mentioned. You should be able to find what's leaking by filling it up and seeing where the water is running out of.

On my '97 Z-71 and '01 Suburban, I didn't have any problems until I put Rain-X washer fluid in it. They both started leaking the night I put that stuff in. Up until that time I used the cheaper washer fluid with no problems. Mine appears to be leaking from the seam where the tank was put together. I doubt that is your problem, just wondering if someone else might have had this happen.

Mine was dripping from the left spray nozzle (cleaner rolling down the firewall and out the bottom of the truck). Took awhile to figure it out.., but what was happening was... pressure would build up in the tank and force cleaner through the pump and out the nozzle.

The fix... There's a gasket in the filler lid that's suppose to allow this pressure to escape through the top of the tank. The gasket was stuck to the filler lid. I carefully raised the gasket up off the lid (using an awe through the holes that already exist in the gasket). No more leaks...

Hope this helps...

I had this same problem this spring in my 01 Denali. Thought it froze and cracked. But after pulling it apart the rear pump brunt up and the seal was damaged. It still was pumping but I guess the long distenance it had to pump overheated the motor over time and the thing fell apart in my hands when I pulled it out.

To get to it remove the battery there is a screw under it that has to come out and open the inner fender well to get to the bottom nuts. the tank pulls out the bottom no jack needed. but you do have to unplug the pumps from the hoses up top. Two pumps in this one for the front and one for the rear two different part numbers both about $17.00 each I changed both just to be safe.

Hey Gilliam,

was wondering if you found your solution yet or not. just did a search and came up w/ your post. my reservoir started leaking about 2-3 weeks ago, and working two jobs + family just didn't leave me time to really check it out.

I noticed the leak in the garage went from blue to a orangey brown color. yup, good ol ac delco popped the positive terminal, spewed acid and took out my tank. I haven't had a chance to disassemble everything and see the depth of the damage, just tossed a box of baking soda on it and shut the hood, you'd think they'd fix the dam batteries after this long.. :seeya:

anyway, good luck, just adding another possibility to the list.

last time i had a tank of this nature break i used a hot glue stick and a soldering iron, worked pretty well, but don't know if it'll help this time.

I replaced both of the washer fluid pumps that are located at the bottom of the reservoir tank. That was the problem. Looked like battery acid had made its way down to the pumps (they basically fell apart in my hands when I was removing them). Anyways, I replaced both and fixed the problem. Make sure to buy them at an auto parts store, not the dealer, and it'll save you tons of money.

Good luck!

On my 01 Yukon it was the plastic line running from the pump.
