Dead remote, dead truck

Last night I stopped and picked up a few things at the store after work, when I pushed the unlock button on the remote it was dead. I locked the truck (1999 nbs) using the remote so I could not start it. Lucky for me there was an auto parts store within walking distance so I purchased a new battery. The remote still did not work until I started pushing buttons like I was experimenting with a new watch. Well I finally hit the majic combination and now everything is back to normal. My question is, when replacing a battery in the remote is it necessary to reprogram it? That was a really bad feeling not being able to start my truck because of the remote being dead, is there a way around the security system if this would ever happen again? Thanks in advance Silverado guru's.

This past week, my remote would open the doors, but not start the truck. I found out I somehow (by pushing the right OR wrong combination of keys) put the vehicle in some kind of valet mode.

The owners manual for mine says that you may have to resynchronize the remote if you replace the battery (or if it gets out of sync for some other reason).

To do this, you press both the lock and unlock buttons at the same time (standing within 5 feet of the truck) and hold them until the locks cycle (about 5 to 10 seconds). Then your remote should work.

You said you had locked the truck using the remote, so you could not start it. I don't understand. I can lock my truck with the remote, unlock it with the key in the door, and start it without any problems at all. Did you leave the keys in the truck and just carry the remote with you? Or do you have remote start capability?
