waring lights

Last night after a short driveI was pulling into the driveway when the engine check light came on. I have unsuccessfully tried to reset it by disconnecting the battery, but it is still there. Any suggestions before I have to take it to dealer?

You don't reset it by unhooking the battery.  Try the manual.  Everything you need to know should be in there.  The last thing you want to do is unhook your battery.

By unhooking the battery you will lose all saved codes which will eventually help in solving the problem.

If you have an older truck and no warranty and you are doing this to get rid of the light, then the battery will have to be disconnected for about 1/2 hour or so.  HOwever, as soon as the computer recognizes the prob again (about 500 miles) the light will more than likely come back on...

If the light is still on the fault is "active" and the light will not go out until the problem is gone. Once the problem is no longer present the light will go out and a trouble code is left in the computer's memory. Newer vehicles require a scanner to remove the codes. Older ones will erase when you disconnect the battery.

A scanner is the only way to know for sure but on a 1995 or newer the first thing I would do is make sure the gas cap is tight. They will set an evaporative emission code if the cap is loose.

What model year is your truck?
