Help me identify my engine

Hi,

I'm beginning to pull my hair out trying to figure out what engine I have.

It's a 1999 Silverado Z71 V8 Vortec...

The 8th VIN digit is a 'T' which according to the owners manual is a Vortec 5300.

The Guy at the dealership (and I) couldn't read the sticker on the fan housing but he thought it is a 5.7liter

At advance AP the salesman cross referenced the air filter (has a flat filter with AC #A1518C on the housing to a 323 V8.

The strange thing is in the manual it calls for a PF1218 oil filter but since I have a 4x4 it says to use the PF52. The PF52 doesn't fit...the threads on the engine block are bigger (the threaded hole on filter is smaller).

I had to go with a fram DG3675 which fit but seemed a little shorter than the old one.

And my previous truck (a 1991 Cheyenne 2WD W/T 4.3 V6) used the PF52!

So basically I'm totally lost

Also, I did get a K&N air filter cross referenced from the tag on housing from the original AC one A1518C to the K&N 33-2135. Is this correct?

TIA

Flat filter means you have a 5.3L or 4.8L . The 5.7L only came in old body style trucks.

On the new body style trucks the 4x4 and the 2wd use the same filter. The PF 52 is for a old body style 99 with 4x4.

If the guy at the dealership doesn't know the difference between a 5.7L and a 5.3L I would shop at a different place.

Thanks for the quick replies.

Ok, so is it possible to tell by this picture what body style I have?

Or if not, by some part of the engine itself?

Thank you

So all V8 use 6.0quarts oil w/filter change? (5.7liter)

Manaual has Vortec 4800, 5300 and 6000 as 5.7liter (6quarts)

One more question, How do I identify the transmission?

4L60E or 4L80E...Is it stamped on case?

That truck has a 4L60e.

All the V8s have the same size pan, that is why they all use the same amount of oil.

Yep thats why they kinda call them modular engines. Some parts places get confussed because GM made both the NBS truck (Silverado) and OBS (the older classic as some call it) in 99 and the NBS could have a 4.8, 5.3 or 6.0 while the OBS could have a 5.0 a 5.7 or a 7.4. And to add to the confussion, in 2000 the 3500 series was still a OBS truck until it was replaced by a NBS truck in 2001. ALso the tranny you have, a 4L60E is just a renamed and reworked 700R4 and is a pretty good tranny if you keep it cool.

tlocus,

Great lookin' truck.

Old Body Style = 88-98

New Body Style = 99-current

OBS motor options were 5.0L and 5.7L. NBS motors are the 4.8L and 5.3L. I believe they all use same trans (4L60-E)..

Check out www.gmpowertrain.com might answer a few questions about what trucks/cars get what motors.

Good luck..welcome aboard.

Actually OBS went from 88 to 99 (and 2000 for C/K3500's) as both classic and Siverado was availble in 99. Also I never liked the name "Silverado" because that used to be the name of a option package on GM trucks and tend to confuse some. They should have picked a name never used before.
