Hey guys, do you guys think this ujoint was bad?

 

Total PITA to get out of there due to the rust.

It came off the '02

oy!!...I don't even wanna know what mine might look like after seeing that...In fact I don't want to know i think...it would be one more thing to add to the ever growing list of things going wrong with the truck that is becoming annoying as hell...

I'm not sure how only that one rusted, the other three on that joint were just fine, as were all four on the other end of the shaft. I guess the grease just got out of it somehow.

 

At least now I can grease them.

 

In other news, don't let the auto parts store sell you two identical ujoints for an '02 with a single drive shaft. The two joints have different part numbers, and yes, they are different. I'm just lucky that I have a second vehicle to drive to the auto parts store to get more parts when one truck has no drive shaft in it....I guess I could have still driven the '02 to the parts store by putting it in 4wd.

I should probably check mine just in case one of these days. With all the off-roading and stuff I have done, it wouldn't surprise me if something like that would happen to my truck.

 

Having a second vehicle around when working on another is a life-saver. I usually steal my dads GMC when I need it, since he is out of town working most of the time. Will have to get myself another vehicle when I get my own garage someday...

I am curious...What are the symptoms of a bad U-joint? I have order parts to change bearings, tie-rod ends, and upper/lower ball joints due to torn grease boots, poping sound on turns, and grinding and road noise...All due to a lot of off roading....

 

Would the U-joints be next??

Bad u-joints usually start to squeak or chirp. The chirping speeds up the faster you go until you can't really hear it at cruising speed. Mine were gone in about 50,000 miles on my '99 Sierra and I replaced them with greasable ones.

I've had ujoints go bad with zero symptoms before asploding.

 

Usually, they vibrate at very specific speeds, like between 68 and 72 mph...Not at 67, and not at 73...Never under load, only when coasting. (At least that was what one set on an '89 that I had did.)

 

When the ones on the '92 went bad, they were just clunking something fierce when going into gear or reverse, along with a lot of slack in the drivetrain.

 

This time around, it was the squeeking as mentioned above.
