wierd problem after transgo shift kit

I installed my shift kit a few weeks ago. All went well and it works well except if i really get on it, when i catch second gear the truck kind of falls flat for a second. Im assuming this is caused by the torque managment?? If so how can i fix this?

The engine RPM drops so quickly with the shift that the ECM does not know how to deal with it. You should be able to get round it with a custom tune but be advised that if it is a 4L60E that the sprags are not that strong in it and if you hammer the shifts too hard too often they will fail and shell out the tranny. I have seen it happen more than once. THe shifts are modulated from the factory for a reason.

More for the mommies in their suburbans. IMO, a shift kit actually increases tranny life by reducing heat and slippage. During that lazy, slow, soft stock shift, the bands are slipping generating heat and wear. A shift kit with firmer shifts should extend the life of components. Unless, of course, you now beat your vehicle more because it's more fun to drive. Now, the rest of your driveline may take more of a beating without TM but I think TM is not necessarily good for the tranny.

 

The torque management really rears it's head when you beef up the trans. I can actually tell the instant TM goes off. Right after the 1-2 shift, it falls on it's face for about 3 seconds and then you can definitely feel the power kick back in. On my truck, it feels like TM is too late anyhow. I can get a nice hard 1-2 shift but TM doesn't kick in untill AFTER the shift is done. I can't figure out how it helps the driveline given what I feel.

 

THat's ok though, the tune I ordered should take care of TM :tear:

That is debatable because you do not have to bang a shift to not slip. When you bang the shift hard you put more stress on the internal parts and the clutch surface because you are not only coupling power but momentum for engine spining and though the slip cycle during shift might be a bit shorter you are shearing the surfaces and oil between them much harder and making about the same clutch plate heat in a shorter time frame because the same relative energy is being routed. Next you will tell me the your brakes will last longer if you wait to last minute and always stop like heck vs moderate stops. I little higher line pressure might not be bad but harder shifts are not needed and you also have to factor the possible life expectancy effect of internal clutch seals from higher line pressures. There is more to this than meets the eye.

Agreed if you are slamming gears. I'm suggesting a firm shift is better than a slow mushy one. No doubt if there is any "banging" or "head snapping" you are putting heavy stress on the drivetrain and it will wear or break faster..

 

The brake comparison is totally irrelevant as brakes are not wet clutches with multiple somewhat complex systems. I still stand by my opinion that firm shifts during normal operation is better for the longevity of the drivetrain compared to mushy soccer mom shifts. Not that there is anything wrong with soccer moms...my wife is one :fume: But then again, she much prefers her Town & Country compared to my Tahoe.

That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling. 
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.

    • New to diesel trucks. I happened to find my oil cooler leaking oil externally with only 4,000 miles on the truck. I didn’t realize this was an issue until I started researching it. Dealer is going to replace it under warranty but I’m wondering if there’s anything GM is working on to fix this issue. I’ve heard the oil filter used is the same as they use on their V6 motors and that’s what is causing the problems. Should I switch to a bigger filter or keep using the OEM recommended?
