Trailer Harness question 02 GMC.

I might purchase a small trailer .

On my 96 GMC I went to an Auto supply store purchased

a wiring harness that plugged in between the tail lights under

the bumper...no cuting of wires required.

Last night I looked under my 2002 GMC and there is a factory pig tail type of wiring harness tucked up near the spare tire.

Does this mean I'm back to cutting and joining wires again ?

Or does somebody make a plug in type of harness for 2002 GMC trucks ?

Thanks.

Those wires are for trailer wiring. You can buy any plug for your trailer, 6 way, 7 way, 4 way, etc... Attach the wires to the plug and you are good to go. No cutting or splicing just connect the pig tail to the plug. Check the function of the wires in the owners manual. Make sure you mount them accordingly in the plug to match the trailer.

If your truck didn't come with the towing package than yes you have to splice the wires that are up by the spare into whatever trailer recepticle you decide to use. NAPA sells waterproof butt connectors that seem to do a pretty good job. You can also get them at any marine supply house. Hope this helps.

Last weekend I added one to my 01 Silverado. I used a hoppy 41145 from Advanced Auto. The wires were color coded for these trucks and it took about 10 minutes to install.

Just go to yahoo and type in hoppy 41145 to see pics.............................

hmm maybe I did mine the hard way. I have an 02 with the towing pkg and spliced the wires onto the pigtail. I verified the wiring was correct using a multimeter.
