Strange Reverse Light Behavior

Recommended Posts

okay...so....as your shifting into reverse the lights come on. When you actually to get into reverse however the lights shut off. So the only time the lights will come on is when your between R and P or R and 1. Is there a wire that got crushed or something of this nature?

I just recently had to swap that stupid little break light switch from up under the column...this is actually the 2nd time I've had to do that. Could this problem somehow be related? Is the wire harness that hooks onto the break light switch also a controler for the reverse lights?

Thanks everyone

If this is on your '94, you probably knocked your neutral safety/reverse light switch out of adjustment. It's the one mounted to the top of the steering column at the base just before it goes thru the firewall.

Did you mean to say, "between R and P, or R and N"? If this is the case, it's not out of adjustment, it's worn out. New switch needed.

how easy/expensive is the replacement?

The brake light one was like $7 bucks..so I figure this one cant' be any worse?

I'm guess'n around $15,and it's not hard to replace. It's held on to the column with 2 screws, one on each end of the switch.

TRY HERE It's actually less than $10, and it clips onto the column, no screws. You may want to try re-adjusting it first....just a thought

If it starts in Park and Neutral like it should, the switch is probably bad.

If you have to hold the lever to the right or left side of neutral to get it to start, adjustment should fix both.
