4x4 Posi-Lock

Hey Guys,

Four wheel drive is playing tricks on me.  Takes forever for it to engage, and then the light will come on and off.  I was reading about a product called posi-lock.  It is supposed to replace the crappie thermal actuator.  Has anybody had experience with this?  I am thinking about putting one in.  I also heard that Warn makes a vacuum replacement one as well.  Dos anybody know which is better?

Thanks,

Never used the Posi-Lock setup, but without a doubt it is a much more reliable system.  You pull that thing to engage 4wd, you are in 4wd.  No matter what you do to that actuator, it will never be as reliable as the Posi-Lock.  Something to think about....

Thanks Kansas Kid,

Yes, I think I am going to get it.  It also has the added advantage that lets you be in low range without having the front axel locked in.  This is good for making tight corners, but I mainly want it so I don't have to deal with that thermal actuator BS.

You should be able to replace the thermal unit with an fully electric one from a 97 or 98, friend of mine did that with his 94 and hasn't had a problem since, not sure of the the part number though.

Thanks Off Road Red,

Maybe I will have to look into that since the posi-lock setup cost $160.00.  Do you know how much that cost him?

Thanks Off Road Red,

I think I am going to make a trip to the dealer.  It has finally snowed here in Central PA, and I need the 4WD.  It has been taking anywhere from 5-20 seconds for the light to come on.  After the light comes on, it will flicker for a little bit.  This is making me think it is slowly taking a crap.  That’s why I want to replace it.  Thanks again.

Hey Off Road Red,

I wish.  Lets put it this way, I am getting around to it.  I have just purchased a TBI spacer and an Eaton Locker for the rear.  Next step is to get a CB antenna, and then comes the posi-lock.  Oh yea, somewhere in between all of that, I am planning on cranking up the torsion bars.  So the pos-lock will get done, in time.  I am going to get the posi-lock instead of the GM replacement.  I like the idea of low-range in 2WD.  Thanks for checking up, I keep you updated.
