Mounting CB's and Antenna

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Let's see some pictures or discriptions on where you mounted your CB's and antennas.

Preferrably if you have the buckets with full console.

...Also...where did you mount your antenne?

I mounted a Cobra 18WX ST under the regular radio, using up the 2nd DIN space.

I took out the cheezy double-DIN sized factory radio and put in a decent Pioneer DIN sized radio. That left me one DIN space and as luck would have it, the Cobra was almost exactly the right size to fit the 2nd DIN space. Took about 30 minutes of precision filing, 1/16" of each side of the 2nd DIN space had to be removed from the dash bezel of the Metra kit (model 99-2003). That particlar kit lets you put 2 DIN radios in the double DIN space of 2003-2005 full size GM pickups.

Here’s what I did.......

I sheared and bent a piece of metal that bolts under the center console and then bolted the CB to it.

The antenna is just a regular old fender mount.

I used the “retained accessory power” from the power window circuit to the passenger door so it powers up just like the factory stereo.

I pushed the coax through the firewall, under the drivers side dash, where the main wire harness goes through the firewall. It was work but it did go through with all of the other wires.

Good Luck

Doug

I didn't really take that many pics while I was putting it together, although I should have. Hands were full of plastic dust, didn't want to handle the camera.

But I did take a few. Here's a flash pic of the CB and Pioneer on my "bench", getting ready for the side plates of the Metra kit to be attached. I had to custom-drill the metra side plates to suit the 2 mounting screws of the CB, and as mentioned in my previous post in this thread, I had to do some custom filing of the bottom DIN hole to make room for the CB. I took 1/16" off each side of the bottom DIN hole, and I also had to shave a hair off the bottom of the hole so the plastic of the Metra kit would be comfortable (not stressed) at the bottom of the CB. You can see how the chassis of the 18WX ST is exactly the same width as the DIN-sized Pioneer chassis. Even though I don't have a pic showing the side plates, the equal chassis widths made the metra side plates fit like a glove.

The plastic dust is still evident in this picture, I hadn't cleaned anything up yet. Those are *not* scratches on the bottom of the CB.

The rear end of the CB had its antenna socket right where the back-brace hole is in the back of the truck's radio space in the dash. So that had to go, I rewired the antenna output to a cable, and then I was able to remove the nylon back-brace stub from the back of the old radio and use it on the back of the CB so that my install could come out rock solid, held in place at the front by the metra kit, and held in place in back by the GM stub as it re-mated with the corresponding hole at the back of the dash space. I connected the back-brace strap of the Pioneer to the same screw that the stub screws onto, making everything behave as a single unit. The 18WX ST is exactly the right depth to be able to reuse the nylon stub.

Here's a so-so pic of the finished install. Taken in dim lighting, this picture was originally almost black. I cranked the gamma, which made the pic "noisy", but it shows the unit in reasonable lighting, with no flash reflecting back into the camera. DSC01808.JPG

Here's a link to a recent thread about CB mounting locations...

I have a Cobra 25 that I mounted just below the cigarette lighter. I have 4 screws that are just screwd into the plastic and holds it in place pretty good. I run dual ant's and I you can tell from the pic run down the center console to two holes that are under the back seat.

I have dual 4' antennaes. I used half of a mounting bracket that this suppose to be for a side view mirror. I bolted them to the inside part of the front stake pockets.

That's what I like. A very nice and clean install that looks like it came from the factory. Good job!:cheers:

how did you mount your cb ant.

One of the members here came up with a bracket for mounting an antenna in the stock location, on the driver's side. I guess a company ripped off the design and is now selling it...which is where I got mine.

GM Diesel Tech

I modified the bracket, so that it sat lower...and more of it was covered by the cowl piece. Really stealthy...

I was looking for a few different mounts myself more so for a police scanner, but CB as well, and I came across the following site. They have all kinds of mounts you may want to take a look at. They even have "stake pocket" mounts which I thought was really cool. Especially since on the new trucks, we don't have those west coast style mirrors anymore that have bars to mount to. Also, I've seen quite a few mounted to the back of the toolboxes that sit in the bed. I also got to thinking that if you could get to the front part of the bed (the part facing the cab), that you could possible mount one there. But check that website, they give quite a few options. Even had one that mounted underneath the hood lip like on the dodges and jeeps. I still have to check to see if that would work with my 2004 Silverado.
