xbox live

My son has been bugging me to death for months now wanting to get xbox live. I'm looking into getting it for him, but know nothing about the networking part of it. I do know that it has to be (A) a wireless set-up because I'm not drilling holes in the ceiling/floor to run the wiring up to his room, and (B) I don't want to spend an arm and a leg on all the stuff needed.

He's paying for the xbox live kit/subscription, and I guess I'll be getting the network stuff.

What all do I need to get, anyone with proven equipment have an recommendation on specific equipment?

Assuming you already have broadband, You're going to need a wireless router in addition to your modem. Here's one for $55. It's got a 4 port switch on it, so you can still plug your PC into it without having to upgrade your current NIC.

You're also going to need one of these. (Xbox wireless game adapter), it will cost you in the neighborhood of $100, depending on where you buy it.

That's pretty much it. It works pretty well.

Yes, I do have RoadRunner.

So the PC would still physiclly plug into the router with a Cat5 cable, but the X-box would be wireless, correct? If so, that sounds perfect.

Do you have that router for xbox Mike? I was looking at some online last night, and came across that one. Just curious.

No, I dont' have wireless. I just had about 150' of Cat 5 laying around, so I stuck connectors on the ends, and I string it from my router to the living room whenever I want to play on Live. If I played it more than twice per month, or had more than 1 person living here, I'd probably invest in a wireless setup.

My buddy at work has that (wireless) setup, and I've been over there and used it many times. It never has dropped out on him, and there isn't any noticable lag.

But yeah, make sure you buy a router that has traditional wired cat 5 ports in addition to the wireless, so you don't have to upgrade your PC's NIC's to wireless.

Cool.

Our computer is downstairs (where the router will be, obviously), and my son's xbox will be directly upstairs from it.

I'm sure that distance wouldn't be a problem, would it?

I've heard that the next xbox (Xbox 360) will have built in wireless capabilities, and that it comes out around october.

Yeah, I seen that 360 was wireless too.

Thanks Mike, I got the Linksys WRT54G router. It all works great. J.T. and his friend were up until 5:00 am playing games last night.

I could have been a millionaire if I was to develop or even sell my idea to GM, and I think that Honda or maybe Yote has this, but as a teenager, I always wanted the rear window to "roll down" into the back of the cab. THAT would be awesome and the technology was already there, via Suburban/Blazer use.

If he's playing Halo2, he's probably whooped my ass.

Some of those kids have the foulest mouths I've ever heard...And I did 11 years in the military. :driving:

Yeah no kidding...

What's your gamer tag man?

I play Halo 2 all the time.

I have a couple.

Imawingnut, and...I'm not giving the other one out. I get enough idiots sending me messages on that account as it is. It's something along the lines of "Hot Lonely Teen Girl"...but not quite  Nobody ever shoots me when they see that tag...Suckers. :driving:

And before you try and add me in there, you should know that I suck something fierce. I mean really, really bad. Hell, I'm surprised they let a 33 year old play the game. There's something in our genes that makes gaming really hard after the age of 25 or so. I just run around in Slayer trying to kill people inventively, or seeing how long I can go without shooting, and without dying.

I also haven't signed on in two months or so. I bet I would really get my ass kicked now.

our gamer tag is quadrunners, it's usually my 12 year old son playing though. I've tried it a few times.

If you hear some foul language out of him, let me know and I'll slap him up 'side the head; he knows better than to act like that. :driving:

    • Curious, did anyone ever get a fix for the vibration reported here.   I have a 2024 Silverado with 6.6 duramax.   I’m noting the same vibration resonating up through the steering shaft into the steering wheel.    Best way to describe- like someone is tapping on the steering shaft/components and it’s resonating into the steering wheel.    thanks.
    • Hi friends - first time poster. I have a 2015 sierra Denali with 150k miles, I’m the second owner and she’s given me 75k of great service. I run a pulse AFM disable device. Starting Thursday when I exited the freeway after a short local ride it started idling rough, with an obvious misfire shake and was down on low end power.  I got it home and hooked it up to my scannner and found no codes but in live data a pretty bad misfire on cylinder 5. I replaced the coil, plug and wire with all new OE replacements (Delphi gn10165 coil, acdelco wire and 41-168 plug). It’s still behaving the same way after firing the parts cannon at it.   I know cyl 5 is a non AFM cylinder so I am not thinking this is AFM related but I’m kinda at a loss. injector? Bent pushrod? It’s running too well over 1k rpm to suggest those IMO. Has anyone chase this issue before and what was it? Any suggestions?
    • 2017 Silverado L83 5.3l 6speed transmission Hello, not a new member but havent posted in a while and my old signup info isnt working so had to create a new account. anyways, I have an issue with my truck and hope someone can spread some light on whats happening: -when it goes to 4cyl mode it makes a clunk sound (but not when coasting or going downhill) -when in 4 cyl mode and under load it makes a load pulsating sound (not a tick). -goes away completely when in M5 gear or when plugging in an AFM delete. Im guessing it is one of 2 things but im not convinced of either to be honest. 1. lifter stuck in v8 mode 2. torque converter shudder realistically it doesn't seem like the TC as there is no physical vibration , and it never happens in v8 mode. but maybe? and wouldnt a lifter make a sound whether with load or not? any ideas let me know please. thank you!
    • Which has made me wonder with the various engine failures of a few brands in the last few years, is it sub par materials such as lifters etc causing failures, or bearing clearances on the crank etc or perhaps bad designing of an engine physically or causing too much load on the components due to the hp/torque they can push out of them. Or is the oil viscosity and additive package of current oils or a lack of oil flow by an oil pump not able to supply sufficient oil at idle or under high load at low rpm. Or is it every item I listed that combined together has pushed the limits so far to the left that there is hardly a margin of safety left and add in some fuel dilution and too long of an OCI and premature engine failure is the result ?.
