Dealer visit

Had a few things done by the dealer yesterday/today.

1. Replaced rubber boot on steering column gear selector.  Don't know how, but it was torn.

2. The clunk in rear end.  The one where they normally lube the splines.  Could not duplicate.

3. Adjust third door.  The bottom latch was dragging on the loop thing it closes against.  The top didn't latch tightly.  In the process or readjusting, they mangled up the loop thing and all that plastic type coating is chipped off of it.  It closes and latches good though.  The top latch is now worse than it was.  Have to slam the top part of the door pretty hard to get it to latch all the way.    Going to have them order a new loop thing for the bottom latch and redo the top again.

4. Musty smell from ac vents.  Yesterday, they said some parts were on national back order.  I wonder if it the Electronic Evaporator Dryer kit?

5. Odometer part of the intrument cluster not lighting up sometimes.  After hitting bumps or tapping on the cluster, it lights up.  Found that there was a short in the cluster and they ordered a new one.

I hate "could not duplicate"!

The torn gearshifting duhickey must be a pretty common thing.  Mine is torn and so is my moms on her blazer

Our S-10 at work is too.  It wasn't that big of a deal, I just added it in there with the other stuff.  I have no idea how long it had been torn.

Update

Noticed this morning that the trip meter on the cluster resets itself back to 0.0 after I turn the truck off for about a minute.  It works and counts the milage I'm traveling, but just resets after setting for a minute or so.  Contacted the dealer and We're going to see if the parts that are on order for the AC come in by the end of next week and set up an appointment for the AC, cluster, and re adjust the third door again.  If the AC parts don't come in by the end of the week, they are going to go ahead and fix the other two.

Update 2

Well, To fix the trip meter, they "reprogramed the cluster for proper operations of all functions".   It's works fine now.

In the process of working on the cluster on the first visit, they broke a bunch of those little posts on the inside of the instrument cluster bezel.  I found the parts on the floorboard when I got home.  Got a new bezel on order. :)

While putting on the rubber boot for the gear selector, they forgot to re connect the wires for the Tow/Haul switch.  I seen it disconnected in between the steering column and that steel brace under the dash.  I could tell it ran up into the steering column and narrowed it down to the T/H switch, since it no longer worked.  I could have reconnected it myself, but thought I'd bring it to their attention that someone forgot to hook it up.

For the A/C musty smell, they performed TSB 99-01-39-004A  "Apply cooling coil coating and install electronic evaporator dryer"  It dries up any "Microbial growth on evaporator core".  It works just like it says in the link above, as far as switching on and off.  We'll see how it works after a couple weeks.  I've heard that it works well and was hoping that they were going to install this kit.

Now, in the process of installing this, something was messed up because the AC was blowing out warm/hot air when on max ac.  Went back to the dealer and the Service Manager checked it out and agreed something was not right.  The guy that did the work came over and looked at it.  After a minute or so, he had that "Brainstorm" look on his face and said to pop the hood because he knew what he forgot to do.  He left one of the fuses or relays in the under hood electrical center out, which was suppose to be removed to install the kit, he just forgot to reinstall it.

I could tell the service manager was a little ticked off over that.

And the third door readjustment, they didn't do it.  No explanation.  Going to get it done when the bezel come in.

The bad thing is, the mechanic that broke the bezel, forgot to hook up the T/H wires, and forgot put the fuse/relay back in, was the same guy.  I told the service manager he needed to have a talk with that guy, and he agreed and apologized.

I still had to fix the cover on the passenger side, that covers all the fan motor and duct work, because the same guy didn't get it installed all the way. :notice:

Whew!!:)

It's the sun that causes the boot to rip.  Our Suburban's that way and so is my '93 Ford, '98 c/k, and buddy's 99 Z71.  My dad's isn't yet though.

Hmmm, thanks Pastmaster.  I didn't even think of that. :)   I'll have to put some "stuff" on it.

Tom,

The trip odometer problem is the same as I had with my first 3/4 ton cluster that was installed in my truck. The dealer replace the cluster. Are you going to get a 3/4 ton cluster as a replacement?

Posted

No, they replaced it last week, but then the trip meter wasn't working and all they did this past week was reprogram it.

I asked them to call me if they had to replace the entire cluster, but they didn't.  When I asked them why and told them I wanted to to pay the difference and get the 3/4 ton cluster, they said they couldn't do it that way.  Oh well.

I noticed, only because you guys mentioned it, on my 2000 that my shift boot is torn also. Hey what is the deal with this thing? I have over 41k on mine and am out of warranty. I guess I will just live with it. The miles just pile up so fast for me. OH WELL.

Must be a common problem.  If I hadn't taking it in for other stuff, I wouldn't have worried about it myself.  I don't think that piece would cost too much, and might not be to hard to install if your comfortable with removing the steering wheel, air bag, and all the other stuff that would be involved.  I know on my '91, I took all that stuff apart twice to replace the little spring that holds tension on the gear selector.  It didn't have air bags though.  I thought that was kind of odd for that spring to break 2 times within a little less that 90,000 miles.

It's a very very common problem.  I replaced the one on our '98 C/K.  I think the part cost $20.  It didn't last more than another couple of months and ripped again.
