odometer

Question

Posted

I have a 99 3/4 ton nbs 6.0 reg. cab 5 speed and the odometer only lights up part of the time and only if I bang on the dash. I have taken the cluster out and can't see anything obvious. How do I test to see if it is the circuit board or a short somewhere? all the other dash lights work fine. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Any info will be helpful.

I just bought the same truck with the same problem. Although I'm not a GM tech, I do troubleshoot electronics. I plan to do some testing, but have more important things to take care of first (we have a baby due soon).

I'll let you know if I find something.

I'd suggest looking for cracked solder joints on the pins for the main connector where power comes onto the board.

So far, that has fixed my 4x4 pushbutton shifter and my rear view mirror.

You typically can't see the bad solder joint, and sometimes the pin is not soldered under the "cap" of solder. Slap a little flux on 'em and reflow 'em with a 600 degree iron. Use 700 degree tip for the ground and power planes.

Good Luck, and I hope you fix it much cheaper than a new (but still flaky probably) unit!

With electronics, you're not going to see anything obvious. Sounds like a cluster problem and unless you're an electronics wiz, it just has to be sent out for repairs or replacement.
