yoke replaced

I took my 04 4x4 (9,000km)into the dealer sat.....just like everyone, i had the 2-3 3-2 clunk, but mine was alot worse....i would get a loud metal clanging sound that spunded to me like there was too much play in the drivetrain

They noticed that the transfer case was leaking fluid (down a litre) and they saw metal shavings when they took out the yoke....the yoke was replaced but the dam thing still has the metal clang.clunk sound that is very loud....it just doesnt happen as much

anyone else have that metal clang /thump?

Transfer case leak....yikes. You need to find where it's leaking, whether it be a seal or a problem with the case. My case developed a small hole in it and it leaked all the fluid out without me knowing about it. Ruined the slip yoke and had to replace the case. There's another guy on this forum with a small hole in his case and he put some jb weld on it to stop the leak. Figure out where that leak is to avoid the $2100 problem that I had.

A/T - 2-3 Upshift or 3-2 Downshift Clunk Explanation

File In Section: 07 - Transmission/Transaxle

Bulletin No.: 01-07-30-042A

Date: December, 2002

INFORMATION

Subject:

Information on 2-3 Upshift or 3-2 Downshift Clunk Noise

Models:

2003 and Prior Light Duty Trucks

with 4L60E or 4L65E Automatic Transmission (RPOs M30, M32)

This bulletin is being revised to add the 2003 model year as well as information about 3-2 downshift Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 01-07-30-042 (Section 07 - Transmission/Transaxle).

Some vehicles may exhibit a clunk noise that can be heard on a 2-3 upshift or a 3-2 downshift.

During a 2-3 upshift, the 2-4 band is released and the 3-4 clutch is applied. The timing of this shift can cause a momentary torque reversal of the output shaft that results in a clunk noise. This same torque reversal can also occur on a 3-2 downshift when the 3-4 clutch is released and the 2-4 band applied. This condition may be worse on a 4-wheel drive vehicle due to the additional tolerances in the transfer case.

This is a normal condition. No repairs should be attempted.

I too had the infamous 2-3, 3-2 clunk. I am now in the process of having it fixed. I showed my dealer TSB 01-04-17-004. He told me that he did not think that it pertained to my truck so with a little urging he researched it a little further and even called GM. He gave them the number above and I am now in the process of having it done. I am just waiting for the nickle plated slip yoke (part #12277702) to come in so we can get the ball rolling.
