Sound experts...need a quick answer

Hey guys,

I hope everyone is getting pumped for a big weekend. In my tahoe their is a factory 8" subwoofer in the back on the drivers side. I was wondering if I went and bought an 8" subwoofer, would it fit and could I use GM's amp for the time being until I could buy an aftermarket amp?

I think you should do some investigation first. For starters, open up the existing subwoofer and see if it's 4-ohm or 8-ohm. You'll want to replace it with a speaker of the same impedance.

Also, the box is probably tuned for that particular woofer. You might end up with worse bass than what you currently have because the box tuning probably won't be right for your new woofer.

But you could luck-out and it might be good...

If you get a high-quality sub, chances are good it'll sound better, but ma-ma-Mike speaks wisely... you could end-up worse.

Here's an option you may consider (I've always prefered sealed enclosures...), check out the stock sub box. See if it's ported or sealed, how stiff and solid it's made and how much volume it has. You might be able to tweak what you have and get good results.
