rear end back lash

Hello everyone,

Quick question........my 2000 Z71 has 3:73 gears in it. It seems to me that there is a bit too much back lash in the rear end. I mostly notice it when I am turning right and the transmission kicks down one gear.........like coming to a corner where you dont do a complete stop.......I get a good clunk from the rear end.

Is this normal?.................this is my first auto tranny in a Z71 so I dont know whats acceptable or not in rear end noise.

Thanking everyone in advance. :D

More likely trans than backlash. Backlash doesn't go out of adjustment. You'd have to have serious bearing wear or gear wear, and you'd hear that long before you'd notice any clunking from excessive backlash.

As to whether or not what you're hearing is normal... dunno.

Hi, New to this site and I have to say it is great...I have had 2 older Z71's and they both have done that..I was told by a GM tech that it was the trans fluid line pressure in the trans that causes that..If i remember correctly there was a bullitin on it which I think they were adjusting/changing a module to make it go away.. have an 05 with 3.42's that now does the same thing but not half as bad as my 97 w 3.73...

My 2005 Silverado does the same thing, was told I have the most current computer software updates and the tranny not finding a gear is 'normal'.Mine is a 3.42 also.
