Backup Aids for Avalanche

Recommended Posts

The issue of backup aids has been tossed about here and there, and I am interested in equipping the Av with a system, the small rear window and high rear deck make for less than optimal vision in the mirrors while backing.  (And yes, I know how to back up, I back ambulances into hospital bays, and the only thing you tend to see in the mirror is your partners backside.)

Anyway, anyone have experience or comments on any of the various units available?  I am looking at one from Guardian, and PORON makes another.

Comments??

After doing much research I just bought the Poron talking system. It just came in the mail today. I also just bought the steering wheel audio controls. Looks like I am going to be busy .Tom, Pewter Z66

OK how much are these parking guides you guys are talking about. I already ran into my first pole while backing up. It was only 3' tall and I did not see it till I hit it.

Hey WS6Y2K

Sorry to hear about the bump, the rear vis. in the Av is one of it's few drawbacks.  The unit I am looking at, the Guardian Alert, is about $350 us.  There are a variety of units available, with different technologies.  Some are affected by weather, snow, dirt, some are not.  Pays to really researche the bejeepers out of it.

Hope this helps

I went with the Rostra microwave system - dont know how I got around with out it - found a local dealer - $363 installed - glad that I did it that way - 3 hours - but it is very smooth. Small three light led strip right on the dash - beeper in front. The two microwave units and the small computer tucked up behind [hidden] the plastic back bumper - no worries about damage. I also installed the AutoZone beeper lights to warn folks that I am backing up.

I'm working on a kit right now that is tied into the factory switch.

It has 4 sensors in the rear bumper. I'll have more info later, picking everything up this weekend to build the kit.

Looks like it the button goes in the 4 pod housing on the dash and I'm guessing that it beeps when you get close to hitting something.

Jason: Any chance this would work on silverado's as well?

Yes, it mounts in the area next to the radio (Where the airbag cutoff switch is located on the trucks).

It's an audible system that beeps when you get in so many feet of an object. It increases the beeping speed when you get close and changes to a constant tone when you're within a foot of an object.

I'll keep everyone updated. I should have it ready sometime in January.

I just bought the poron talking system, but seeing that Jason is working on a system, I may wait for his. I was wanting a cutoff switch like he showed. I may instal the other one on my kids car.

There will be separate kits for Avalanches, Suburbans (Yukon XL), Tahoe (Yukon) and Silverado (Sierra).

I really like the cut off switch too because there may be times when you don't want it beeping.

I'm getting all the supplies I need together to build the kit.

With the holidays and stuff, the kit will probably be ready around the end of January.

The beep is also loud enough that if you have the radio up, you can still hear it. Really nice system.
