Slow starting question

I have a 2000 Silverado that requires 2-3 attempts before it starts. The problem started a few months ago and GM dealer said I needed a new fuel pump ($1000!!!). It runs perfectly fine - has never died. Does this seem reasonable? A new fuel pump?

Thanks,

Mike

i just got a brand new ac delco fuel pump for my 2001 gmc serria off ebay for $169.00 plus $14.00 shipping so i would shop around first before i gave that much money for it i dont know how much labor they charge to change it but if you have any other gm dealers around i would check all of them to get the best price

It's possible the pump is a problem even though it runs fine. If the check valve in the pump is bad, it will allow all the fuel to drain out of the fuel line when parked and make starting difficult. Once started. it'd run fine.

Can the check valve be replaced? That makes sense because if I shut it down and start it right away, it starts right up. But if it sits for 10 minutes or so, it takes a few tries to get going.

Is it causing any other damage by leaving it this way?

If I try and replace this myself, what's the difficulty rating? When I looked for replacement pumps, there were several options - how do I verify what I need?

Thanks for your advice.

NO.

As for leaving it that way... It would cause more wear and tear on the battery/starter, but how much is another question. Otherwise, I don't see any harm.
