Homelink Install Complete

This past weekend I installed a Homelink setup from an Acura into the overhead HVAC console. It looks 90% OEM to me. Others that don't know the trucks wouldn't know that it wasn't stock. It works great the range is twice what my original garage door opener had. I did it mainly for peace of mind. I can't park in the garage so if the truck gets broken into they can't steal my opener.

Sounds like a good mod. Do you have any pictures of the finished install? I bought and installed the Homelink console from JPCustoms already but this could be useful info for others, and I always like to see what everybody else is doing to their trucks.

I'll post some shots ASAP. The Homelink unit I used was out of an '99-'03 Acura CL/TL, but a '98-'03 Honda Accord, or pre '05 Odyssey unit would work also. They are all the same.

The homelink is all one piece combined with a sunglass holder. I had to chop up the Acura console quite a bit to house only the Homelink portion. All that you see on the truck now is onyl the homelink buttons and surround. There may be other Homelink consoles that would be easier to mondify, but I found this one on ebay for $10. I couldn't pass it up. Plus, it offered a challenge to make work.

What does Homelink do? If they break window on your truck can they just get inside the truck and push a button to open the door? or how does it work?

HomeLink is nothing more than an installed, hard-wired RF (radio frequency) programmable transmitter. You can program it to "learn" the codes of most any RF transmitter... garage doors the most popular. But you can program the operation of a gate, lighting, basically any device uses a RF transmitter. Sure beats a bunch of garage door openers and remotes laying around your truck!

Having a gate opener and a garage door opener for 2 houses is a bit of a pain. But there have been cars broken into and the garage door openers stolen. The theives could then come back at anytime and have access to your house unless you change your opener or retrain it for different codes if possible. Having it hardwired it is more difficult to be stolen. Its simply much more convenient. Here's a pic. The flash exagerates the color differences.

Search ebay for 'acura homelink'. You'll see the piece that I modified to make this. It requires quite a bit of cutting.

Did you know that to get a factory installed homelink transmitter on an '06 Silverado, you have to buy the sunroof, which includes the homelink transmitter? That's really stupid. Not to mention expensive.

Just out of curiosity...what did you use to cut the whole nicely for the unit? I have to modify my center console for a scanner. Would appreciate any ideas so I dont booger it up too badly. Thanks. Looks great too by the way.
