Poor lube job

I took my 05 Silverado to the dealer for the 32K Oil, fileter and grease job. The service was good since it was a Saturday so no complaints there. BUT! when I got it home I thought I would have a peek underneath. I only saw evidence of the ball joints getting greased and the 2 inner rods...thats it. There was no way they greased the idler, and pitman. I went back to speak with the fella and he said yes they did grease the ones they could find. I know it takes a bit of hunting to see these fittings but you would think a place that is doing this constantly would know.

So I took it upon myself to go to the local auto parts store and buy a quick grease gun and do the damm things myself. I suppose I could have bitched enough to get it done right but hell, does that mean I would have to look each and every time I take it in....no way. It took me 10 minutes if that and all is well.

Anyone reading this might want to check theres as well.

If you are going through all of that, you might as well drop the oil and add the Mobil 1 yourself and save all that money!

I own a 2002 Yukon Denali and change my own oil most of the time. However, I know that I'm missing some of the required lube locations outside of the ball joints. How many places should I be lubing and where are they?

Alvocado,

You might want to take a look at this tech article on grease zerks. As mentioned in the article getting grease into the passenger side idler arm is next to impossible. You might want to replace this zerk with a 90 degree zerk. Once you grease them a time or two you just automatically remember where they are.

Whenever I change the oil in my truck (3000 miles give or take a few), I go ahead and lube the chasis and steering components. Seems to help. Should pay off in the harsh winter times.

What does the dealer charge for an oil change/ lube job and what kind of oil does he use?

I spent $40 for a case of 12 of the AC Delco PF 59 filters a few months ago and use Castrol Syn Blend at about $11 from Wal Mart and do it all myself.

Rotate the tires every other month and I can usually get it all done in an hour. The hardest part is jacking the truck up and putting it on jack stands.

Here's a tip that might work for you concerning lubing the idler arm zerk. Turn the steering wheel all the way to the right and then climb under your truck and try it.

I found this technique totally by mistake, cause my wheel was already turned all the way to the right to facilitate me pressure bleeding the brakes. I had gone out and bought a 90 degree zerk to put in and everything--didn't need to. Try it and let me know if it works for you too.

Hey all, Rjivine is right...I did it last week with no difficulty at all. The reason I take the truck to the dealer is because its still under warranty and if there are any screw ups they can buy it. Once warranty runs out I will do it myself.

I have a dumb question. . .are all zerks the same size? So if I buy a grease gun I just grab one and go, or does it have to be a certain size?

They should all be the standard size, I have only once ever run across big zerks, but they were not on a automotive application. If you get a greese gun, look for one that has a 45 or 90 fitting included.

A good rule of thumb about the zerks is that if you have a joint that moves, there is normally a zerk there.

If it were a perfect world, yes there would be a Zerk in every movable joint. However, this is the time where most companies go CHEAP. A lot of newer stuff do not have grease Zerks until you have to go and replace the parts, which THEN do have a grease Zerk. I've run into this several times on my trucks in the past and other work trucks. Maybe I'm just "lucky" heh.

I changed a few of the fittings to 45 degree or 90 degree angles. definately made the job easier!!

the dealer doesn't give a sh!t, so if he misses a few, oh well.........
