2005 2500HD issue

Well I have 1,500 miles on my 2500HD and I noticed that the front tires are starting to show signs of cupping. Ever since I bought this truck the wife and I both noticed that it didn't drive as nice as the 1500HD did. The 1500HD had a harsher ride but it was so easy to drive it, it would steer as nice as most cars I have driven. I just mentally wrote it off because it was a "bigger" truck than the 1500HD.

Has anyone had alignment issues with their new truck?

I hope it's nothing more than just an alignment issue. I called and got an appointment for tomorrow. We will see what they find.

My new '05 Dmax does not track as well as my '01 6.0L. The two trucks are identical, except for the motor/tranny. (extra weight)

I've been expirementing with air presure in the front tires, and it seems to be a little better than before.

The other factor is that I have the Bridgestone factory 245/75/16 tires on this on, and right after I bought my '01, I replaced the stock 245 Firestones with Michelin LTX M/S 265/75/16's... It drove like a dream!!!

My 2500 non-HD was cupping the tires shortly after I got it. My alignment guy said the new trucks require a lot of air pressure to get the tires to wear right. I went from 35 psi to 55 psi and that did the trick.

Good luck!

I just rotated the tires on my 2005 2500HD for the first time at 6000 miles. The tires looked great when I rotated them. No signs of cupping or uneven wear. I am running 50 psi in all four tires. I would have the dealership check out your alignment under warranty.

On a side note, what is the proper lugnut torque for the 2500HD's? I torqued the wheels at 150 ft-lbs.

How was your truck delivered to the dealership? Mine was strapped on the dealerships flatbed, I purchased as a dealer swap. Anyway, this thing was chained down so I would not budge an inch. The service guys at my dealership had me come in for an alignment with my first oil change. It did ride better after the alignment. Truck now has 30k and no problems

I just rotated my 2500HD tires and I had some cuping of the fronts. I run 45psi all around except when towing. The book states 140 ft-lbs. for the wheel torque.

als1984z28, I dont know if your roads are as bad as ours down here in the Mon Valley. I only get about 10K out of each set of tires. Sometimes I swear that driving on the surface of the moon may be smoother than our roads in SWPA.

It was just an alignment issue. When I bought the truck is was on a dealer trade and I left the lot with the truck about 2 hours after it was delivered.

Anyway, it drives more like the 1500HD now.

On a side note this 2500HD has such a smother ride than the old 1500HD.

Hey, 01silverado, they are just as bad here in central PA, I think our state has the worst highways I've ever been on.

I rotate mine every 5,000miles and always notice cupping on the fronts. I do run mud tires and they have been known to do that more than standard all season tires.

Als,

Cupped tires are not always indicative of an alignment issue but more with tire pressure and braking habits. It is hard not to cup big tires in today’s traffic especially if they are not properly inflated. If the dealer aligned it today and rotated the tires, you will not notice “cupping” for a while but it will be back. Since your case was very low miles, it very well sounds like a toe issue.

Remember, a 2500HD is not “identical” to a 1500HD. 2500HD’s are basically a 1 ton truck with a GVWR of 9400 lbs while the 1500HD has the same lighter section modulus frame as the Non-HD with a GVWR of 8600lbs and less.

I have been running 55psi in all 4 tires, checked that as soon as I saw the slight cupping (and I mean slight). It was a fluke that I noticed the tire cupping, the sun was shining on the tires at just the right angle and I saw that the tread on the outside of the front drivers side tire was not smooth. I ran my hand across it and could feel the cupping in tread.

I am near Sewickley and the roads over here are horrible, actually I think that they are horrible everywhere in PA! Has anyone driven on route 65 from the McKees rock bridge towards Pittsburgh? They "fixed" the bridge by paving over it and not raising the metal expansion joints. It's like riding the jack rabbit (kennywood amusement park ride) on my commute into work everyday! Got to love PennDot!

Ya know, I have never bought that "alignment" excuse. In my humble opinion, tires cup for only 2 reasons: a) because either they're out of balance or b) because they're out of round. And they're much more likely out of round than out of balance. Tire manufacturers in this country get away with a lot of poor quality product.

So if I had a tire cupping problem, which I don't, I'd probably sell the tires before the cupping was obvious and get a brand new set of some-other-brand tires. No sense ruining my truck's ride to save a few bucks.
