High mileage diesel

I have a chance to purchase a 2004 Sierra 2500 HD Duramax,loaded---fibre-glass tonneau, leather, rhino liner, dvd player, hidden hitch etc-pretty well everything you can put on a truck. Oh yes, it also has a the super chip. It is in mint condition inside and out and drives great. I need some advice. It has approx. 94,000 km.(57,000 miles) on it mostly highway driving in a little less than two years. I can probably buy for around $40,000 Canadian with an extended warranty from the used car dealer. I'm not too experienced with diesels and have never owned a GM before. I'm just wondering, am I asking for trouble buying a 2004 with this many miles? I would appreciate your comments and advice. Also is there some way I can use the VIN to look up the truck's history without having to pay?

There are DuraBux truck out there working all the time with over 400,000 miles on them so 57,000 is no really that many. These are easy 300,000 mile engines with a little care and regular maintance.

Thanks for your reply 16gaSxS. I was more than a little worried about the warranty time left on the engine with all the problems they've been having with injectors. Any other comments would be appreciated.

I'm not aware of any injector problems after 02. Besides those trucks have a 200k warranty on the injectors themselves. What is the exchange rate? $40,000 american would be way too much. As stated earlier, 57,000 miles on a DMax is just getting broken in. Sounds like a tight truck though.

Thanks for your comments timothy. The truck would list for around $62,000 Canadian new. The $40,000 I think would be around $30,000 US. Does that sound any better.

Things to consider when buying used diesels:

 

Is it a GM used truck dealer? If so, an aftermarket chip will void a warranty unless this guy puts it in writing.

 

The miles are low for a diesel, but I would be a little hesitant on buying a diesel that I "knew" ran an aftermarket chip. I know that alot of people do it to their trucks (like me), but it all depends on how big a chip he's running.

 

Does he have aftermarket pyrometer and boost gauges in the truck? Those things are a must when running a chip. I can bury my pyro in the red with just 60 additional HP when I'm out messing around. I would pass if it's a bigger chip (+60 HP) and he never referred to gauges to monitor his boost and temps.

 

In addition, all these aftermarket tunes / chips, etc. add additional stress on the Allison.

 

It’s great that you know it has an aftermarket chip in it. This gives you an advantage over the poor guy that buys my truck…

I may be wrong but Superchips only makes a handheld selectable programmer that has 3 HP tunes ranging from 55-100HP. If this is the case, does that programmer come with the truck? You’ll need it to make changes in your HP settings.

Thanks Machine, for that interesting info. It is a Super Chip and the programmer comes with it. I didn't notice any gauges, though. The truck is being sold through a used truck dealer not a GM dealership. We still haven't come together on an agreeable difference between trade-in allowance and truck price. I guess if it's meant to be, it will happen. The warranty he is throwing in with the truck is a "Lubrico" warranty. I just found out that it limits the amount per claim to $2500 and I think it limits the number of claims, even though it is a 4 year-80,000 km warranty.

I know of a truck just like what your talking about here for sale the guy wants $31,900 with 57,000 miles and I know a guy who just bought a New one Out the Door for $34,000 . Why would any buy a used truck when for $2100 more you get a brand new one?

 

This might be another option or atleast a negotitation tool for you.

Thanks for your comments SXS. We do have the employee discount here. The same truck in Canada, without the extras(hidden hitch, tonneau, tube steps, chip etc) lists for around $60,000. With the employee pricing, plus the cash back refund if you don't finance, you can buy the truck for about $52,000. On top of that we have to pay 15% sales tax. I gave the dealer my last offer and I haven't heard back from him, so I think I'll just wait and see if something comes up selling privately. Being new to this forum, I appreciate the time you guys took to respond to my questions.

Thats about 33500.00 USD I would say that is a starting point. It has lots of goodies but you should be able to do much better than that at least 15 per cent less from a non GM Stealer. :sigh:

    • Are you going to take long trips in it?  If so, try out the seats in the various trims. For me the lower trim level seats were not comfortable. 
    • I have a 2016 that I bought new and still own. I'm around 129,000 miles now. The biggest problem was a transmission failure about 2 years ago around 95000 miles. No warning, just failed while driving down a back road. A reman GM transmission installed and it's been fine ever since. A few other minor problems along the way. I am in no hurry to replace it. It's been paid off long ago and do plan on driving this as long as I can.   I will admit I am leery about all the additional electronics in the newer models and feel that it is just more potential problems. I think there's actually more than I would have wanted in this 2016 but so far so good. I think even if something major like lifter failure happened, it would still be cheaper to at worst, drop a new engine in than buy a new vehicle.
