Preventative maintenance on an 88 Silverado...

I am the proud new owner of a 1988 Silverado 1500 regular cab. It has only 120,000 miles on it and it's in pristine condition. No dings, dents, bondo, very few scratches and fresh paint from 03. A/C system redone in 04 as well as some other things. The list is too long to remember from the top of my head.

But I want to keep this thing tip-top. What should I do besides oil and air filter changes every 3,000 and 12,000 miles? What about the tranny? Should I have it serviced every 6 months or so? I just want to make sure it runs great for a LONG time.

Thanks guys!

I had an 89 K1500 5.7 with 180,000 on it. Just general maintanance worked for me. Other then the normal stuff (filters, brakes, plugs, tires, etc) I had to replace the starter, water pump, alternator and rear U-Joint. Other then that it was all original from the day I took it home for the dealer. Great truck!

Welcome abord Nick,

Like the other guys said, just do regular maintence and you'll be good to go. You'll find a few topics on here about transmission service. If you don't really know the service history of your tranny its really best to NOT mess with it at all.

I've gotta 94' very similar to yours with about 190k miles and I've expirence no real trouble. This is a small list of things I've replaced. Any or all of these would good basic maintence.

* Water pump

* fuel pump and filter

* radiator and both major hoses

* AC system (cmopressor, dryer and orphus)

* distributor

* plugs, wires and cap and rotor

* PCV Valve

* starter

* alternator

Hope this helps.

I know for a fact the water pump, fuel pump, a/c and transmission have been worked on. The water pump and fuel pump replaced. The a/c was completely redone in June of 04, and the transmission seal was replaced early last year as well. They also did some suspension work, shocks I believe were replaced.

The guy and his son did put over 6100 into the truck before he sold it to me and it runs great, just needs an alignment and new tires.

I'll just keep to the basics unless I'm forced to fix something.

Thanks guys!
