HELP! 3 way mb quart install in front doors!

hey there,

 

i have an 01 yukon and have recently bought mb quart psd-316 3-way components (6.5" woofer, 4" mid, 1" tweet) for front door/a-pillar mounting. i have seen some people mount the 4" mid in place of the factory tweet location under the factory front door grills. this is what i would like to do. after taking the door apart last night it seems that some mechanicals/bracing might be in the way. how has anyone done this? unlike the oem woofer, were both the new 6.5" and 4" speakers mounted on top of the door panels (not to the door frame)? were spacers then used for the mid to avoid having to cut into the door? or were you able to cut into the door here?

 

also, for now i plan to use stock power. i noticed that there are two speaker pairs coming into the door for the stock tweet and woofer. where does this originate from? i'm looking for the front right and left speaker pairs that have been amplified but not crossed over yet to send into the mb quart x-over. does anyone know where that is?

 

does anyone have the stock stereo/speakers wiring diagram?

 

oh, btw: if it matters, i do NOT have the bose system

 

any help would be greatly appreciated.

You're going to run MB Quart off of the stock system? That's like running a Ferrari with the engine out of a moped.

 

Not sure about how to mount that many (of that size) speakers in the doors, but you'll probably need some reinforcement. Mounting that many speakers in that cheap-a$$ed particle wood in the doors is a recipe for lots of rattles in the doors from hanging speakers.

yeah, i know i should use an amp. the speakers, although a great deal, were kinda pricey. so, i figure i'll install them and hook them up - if they sound crappy i'll then look for an amp. i knew i would eventually end up there anyway. i have seen a few of our trucks on the net with this setup in the past - i'm just trying to get some input from any one of them. i agree, mounting on the door panel is not ideal - again, just need some help from someone who has done this before.

 

also, thanks for the lead with the wiring - but i have that info already.

i'm looking for the factory wiring diagram of where the speaker wires are coming from (via an outboard amp that is doing the x-over?), and where this amp might be located.

if the head unit is powered (IS IT?), i can just take the right and left front wires out of the head unit, but the fact that they split into highs and lows somewhere in between the head and the door speakers is leaving me scratching my head. thanks again! david

The 6.5's mount to the metal of the door, and the factory tweeters are mounted to the fiberglass-reinforced-plastic door panel. I mounted a pair of tweeters where the factory tweeters used to be, which is where you plan to mount your mid's. I fabricated a bracket that mounted to the factory tweeter mounting screws on the back side, got some plastic screw-head-hiders from the parts drawer at Home Depot, and put everything together and you can't see the screws from outside the factory grills.

 

The factory grills remove by unbending the tabs all the way around. Be careful, because if you bend and unbend them a few times, they might weaken. Best to only take them off once.

 

You won't have a buzzing problem from the mid's. Their frequencies are high enough that there is not much excursion there, so if it were me, I'd proceed with the plan you have outlined above. I might consider however, also mounting your tweeters in there...there's plenty of room, and then you won't be bastardizing your A pillars, and you'll be able to wire your MBQ crossovers without a lot of head scratching.

 

For the 6.5" woofers, you'll want to fabricate some sort of thick gasket to keep the bass from the back side of the speaker from making it around to the front. The door panels have a moulded plastic circle that mates up with a similar foam gasket on the factory speakers (which are mounted to the door). When you replace those factory woofers with your MBQ's, you'll want to duplicate what they did from the factory.

 

The factory wiring to both the woofer and the tweeter is full-range to both locations. Even though you see 2 different connectors, they carry the same signal. The woofer just shrugs off the high frequencies; the tweeter wiring gets cheezily-bass-blocked at the tweeter--that's their crossover. So you take the the female plug off the factory woofer, and attach it to the MBQ crossover, and then run new wire to the mid and tweeter from there, you can will need some sort of connector on the wires to the mid and tweet so you will be able to remove the door panel in the future. Would also be good you make the connections obvious, so that if 5 years down the road the power window stops working, the technician (who knows, might be you...) will be able to fix it.

 

You should de-wire the factory head unit for a test, and use a battery and the old woofer to confirm the speaker wiring polarity of the connector you end up using.

the wiring info was a big help! the speaker setup i'm going with doesn't jive with your setup, but sincere thanks for the time and effort!! my setup has

(1) 6.5" woofer, (1) 4" midrange, and (1) tweeter. the new 4" midrange now resides where the factory door tweeter used to be. the new tweeter now resides in the a-pillar.

hey, 1/2 hour of detoilet?? i live 45 mins north of detoilet (rochester hills) maybe i'll see you around.

    • Your tire pressure issue may just be batteries, you can reset them using tge Ing switch (I think) and the owner's  manual. ChatGTP will b e a faster, better help than Google.
    • The thinking is that starting out in a higher gear makes it easier to avoid applying excessive torque when pressing the gas pedal. In a modern 4wd truck with 4 low and a limited slip or locking rear end, I would use 4 low and try to crawl up the ramp. Sometimes if they are too slippery, you have to back up to let the boat have some bouyancy, and then accelerate briskly to get some momentum to help you pull the through the slippery parts. 
    • I have a Retrax pro that I first had on my 2020 chevy and transferred it to my current GMC.  It stays in the garage most of the time, so hard for me to judge it's long term weather resistance.  It still works perfectly, been very durable.  It doesn't see oil patch usage, but it's not a mall queen.  It keeps most things mostly dry (small leaks) and the security of it is enough to slow someone down but not keep them out for long.  I would buy one again, it works for me.     
    • Thanks to the convenience of Amazon, I was able to get a few things done to the truck today.  I installed Carquest Premium oil and air filters with five quarts of Mobil1 High Mileage 10-30 along with a quart of Pennzoil Platinum 5w-30 I already had.  The latch for the flip up center console lid was broken so I replaced it along with the power mirror switch.  I found my push retainer assortment this morning and reattached the plastic under the bumper and it was only held on with a few screws and retainers.  Then I programmed a new remote keyless entry fob so I can lock my dog in the truck when I take her out with me (I've got to keep the air going for her since it's been in the 100s).  Finally, I ordered some LED interior bulbs and replaced the reading lamps.  The front lights are working fine while one of the back lights only works intermittently and the other not at all.   While under the truck, I found the source of at least one of the noises: the sway bar links need replacing.  I ordered a set of Suspension Dudes links with Code Red bushings.  Never heard of them, but they're made in the USA and have decent reviews.  While making yet another Amazon order, I went ahead and added a set of front tow hooks.  I went with red, since that's the color of the sway bar link and bushings and it should look decent enough on a black and chrome truck.  Speaking of which, it doesn't bug me much, but the passenger side mirror has a chrome cap while the driver side doesn't, so eventually I'll make them match one way or another.  Oh, and I ordered a $20 TPMS reset tool.  No idea if it will do anything for my sensors but it was cheap and will work for the Ford Transit Connect as well.     For tradition's sake, I ordered a new oil change wrench.  I kept the Snap-On 9/16"x15mm GM wrench I bought when I was 18 in the 2006 GMC from the time I bought that truck until the truck was lost.  While I was tempted, there's no need to spend $80 for a new SO wrench, or even $50 with shipping for a used one on Ebay.  I just bought a Duratech 15mm extra-long ratcheting wrench to do the job as needed.  It works, and if I like that wrench enough, I'll buy the set.  
    • The recall is for exactly this issue - those drain holes combined with the limited environmental capability of the tailgate electronics card inside the tailgate were a problem. The “safety issue” was the potential for the tailgate to spontaneously open, but all kinds of tailgate misbehavior can occur from water contamination of that control card.    There is no real fix yet. The initial recall just disabled the tailgate. Later, when parts became available, they would replace bad parts with new parts of the same bad design. My dealer is going nuts because the few times I let them get their hands on my truck, my tailgate is off due to a slide-in camper installation. They really want to cut my tailgate wires, but I won’t give them the chance. I will let them get their dirty hands on it when a real fix (redesign) is available.  My tailgate, which works just fine with sealant plugging the drain holes, will remain safe in a dry storage crate until then.
