Another Dual Tank Question

Getting bad gas mileage is bad enough but then to have such a small tank (25g) in my shortbox sucks.

 

Can you put an additional tank on these things without adding an inbed tank?

Yes, you can replace the 26G plastic tank with a REPLACEMENT 45G steel tank from Transfer Flow but they want ~$900 for it plus the installation (if you don't do it yourself). Way to pricey an option for me to gain 19 gallons.

 

I haven't found anyone who will discount off their list price.

My shortbed came with a 26 gallon tank fron the factory. Finding another shortbed tank will be your best bet. It will bolt to the opposite side of the truck, but getting a fuel tank "switch" to connect the two will be a costly endeavor. Roughly $300.00. But I guess thats better than $900.00 for a new tank. And you have to run the switch to the cab. If Im guessing correctly, that would make 52 gallons.....and cost $156.00 to fill up.

 

No need to get another fuel pump, the switch will utilize the pump in the factory tank and provide the correct fill plate for the new tank.

If you do that, where do you hang the muffler and tailpipes?

Oh yeah, I did forget to mention that huh...Okay, here goes.....GM actually has a refit for the stock exhaust system that you can find thru your Chevy dealer under the 1 ton truck parts listings. The refit has a replacement exhaust tube that bolts to the existing factory tube near the front of the transmission. I believe that you can bolt it right up, but you may need to weld it....not sure. I do know that you will have to cut the pipe near the middle of the driveshaft and weld the new rear pipe to the existing factory pipe. The refit re-routes the exhaust pipe like a half an inch off the passenger side of the driveshaft just far enough to clear the passenger gas tank. The kit also comes with a heat shield for the new tank as added protection. Believe it or not, the pipe being that close to te driveshaft does not interfere with suspension movement or driveline movement at all.....says the General.

wouldn't it just be easier to get an auxillary tank from a suburban or avalanche? if you get them in the 2500 series they use dual tanks. the rear tank from a suburban/avalanche can probably be retrofitted to work in a pickup. just need to go searching for a wrecked 2500 suburban.

I looked at the RPOs and could not find an auxillary tank listed for a suburban. Did I miss something? That small tank is the main problem with my short bed 03 2500 HD. I just never thought about the size of the gas tank. My previous truck had the 35 gal tank. Big difference!
