Oil catch can

I was thinking about installing an oil catch can and was wondering who has installed one before? I heard they help keep the top end clean since GM has a bit of a design flaw.

Did it catch a lot of oil?

Is it even worth my time?

By the way I'm still young so hard corners and donuts are a weekly occurance.

OH sorry, i should have explained that.

Here goes my best shot...

Its a filter canister that can catch and capture the oil that seems to get caught in intake plenum due to the vacume lines.

A quick search with "oil catch can" in yahoo will yield some good results.

Why GM engines are some of the cleanest emissions wise on the market. Sounds like a waste of time. Just keep it tuned up and oil,filters changed.

ummm, i see your point. i think. let me try to sum up your thoughts here....

You're thinking that because GM engines pull good emissions #'s then it must mean that they are in top condition inside the head and the intake. correct? And that changing the oil and oil filter should be all that is necessary?

ok good points.

but hear me out. GM engines are emissions friendly but they are not perfect. The PVC valve is faulty and allows oil, in some cases alot of oil, to enter the intake thus reaching the heads. GM must have reconized this problem as well. Isn't that why they came out with "GM top end cleaner."

I think that the trucks and the SUV's don't really have a big problem with this because they don't pull high G corners. Though it sounds like the guys that are really having the issue are the GTO and Vette guys.

Performance issues that raise from this come from the fact that oil in the intake reduces the octane of the gas you are running. Thus some people have said that cleaning their engine out has reduced some knocking from their engines.

If you use oil then use the fixed orfice PVC and that will take care of the problem. The valve is only available at your local Chevrolet/ GMC dealer.

Catch cans are used on turbo engines. Unless your running a turbo or this for another car besides the truck in your sig. If it's for your truck and its N/A, then I would install a turbo timer, neon lights, and a darth vader triple deck wing. ROCK ON!!!

Oil in the intake manifold DOES NOT decrease the octane. Slap whoever told you that. It's the carbon on the piston's and the valves that cause the knocking and products like sea-foam remove the carbon and reduce the pinging.

did a quick search online and i see where the mistake is.

an oil/air mixture, created by oil in the intake, can decrease the "effective" octane rating of your gas.

makes sence to me

You mean, PCV valve, right?

GM doesn't use one of those. At least since 2003 and up on the 5.3s and 1/2 ton Z71s. Fixed orifice device on my 2003 and I assume the same on my 2005. My '03 has nearly 80,000 miles on it now and during the Spring, I pulled the valve covers and there is no goop or gunk in there--just for the heck of it. It is a clean motor, quiet. No need for any top-end cleaner for the inner workings of the valves and pistons.

Definitely no need to rice it out...

Ok, here we go. Just to see what the guy is talking about. This could be helpful for a vehicle with a lot of gas blow-by. I don't see much value at all on well-functioning motors, or rigs that aren't high reving and not being slung into the road rallys:

I know - I know. I soooooo resist - the temtation!!!!!!!!!! Chrome batter cover. YEAH. That will add 5 horsepower right there! I need a chromed coolant purge tank as well.

A nice "rally" decal surely is 10 horsies. Some "DAKAR" and "BAJA" decals would also be a nice touch!

And, I so miss the performance that my '05 could have because GM didn't install a hood light!!!!

Actually, I'd love to get some local town reaction by putting fake pressure gages on the hood and a decal that sez "Experimental Hydrogen Powered". Now THAT could cause a reaction!

I might do that on my little cousin's S10. He can be convinced to do anything to his truck.
