Radio did something weird

:driving: On saturday morning I cruise to the bank,radio is working fine.I get back in the truck, start it up and the radio is not playing. So I think to myself maybe I turned the volume down before I got out (don't remember doing so). Cranked the volume and no sound,the display is telling me what station I'm on so I know the radio is on. Then I think maybe XM is screwed up so I try regular radio and nothing. I drive home and shut the truck off again and resart it, still no volume.Now I start thinking of major problems considering all the electrical issues my friend had with his 02 Sierra Denali. Then I figure maybe I blew a fuse,don't know how but I figure it's the most simple thing to check. I remove the radio fuse under the hood,check it and it looks ok so I put it back in.Check the one marked AMP that one looks good too. So I figure let me try one more time before I call the stealer for an appointment and what do you know now it works. Could me unplugging the fuse maybe reset the radio for whatever reason ? Anybody have any suggestions ? It has worked fine so far this week.

The radio is the Bose system with the cd and tape player and GM XM radio add on kit.

THERE IS A TSB ON THIS PROBLEM, WHICH INVOLVES GM TO REPROGRAM THE RADIO. IT ALSO STATES THAT THE RADIO WILL COME BACK ON SOME TIME BY THE NEXTED DAY AND NOT DO IT FOR A WHILE

Really a TSB for this. That's good to know. The radio does flake out sometimes like if you push the display button it changes the station or the display comes out messed up (half the song name and half the band name),or if you turn the volume down from say half way it goes up then goes down as your turning the knob down. Other than that the sound system is pretty darn good for stock. Thanks for the info

Mine has done that a few times as well. Unfortunately never when it was convienant to take it to the dealer when they could scan it. They did write it up in the history but until they can see it "not working" they can't do anything else.

Well my radio stopped working again today. Funny thing is I was coming out of the bank again. I pulled the radio fuse and reinstalled it and it works again. Bobcat do you happen to know where I can find that TSB so I can refer it to my dealer. I have to make an appointment anyway to get my grille replaced.

My newly installed nav radio just did the same thing. Started the vehicle and the audio was gone. The radio was still on with all the info displayed, the navigation still worked but no audio. No audio from the CDX or the OnStar either. After I got home, I disconnected the battery and reconnected and the audio came back on. Apparently disconnecting the battery or pulling a fuse resets the system and it works fine again.

 

This could get really annoying if it continues.

pulling the fuse will erase all your presets tho, right?? The 3 times mine has done it, the next time I started it (not within a few minutes but after it sat for atleast 30 mins) it came back on.

Interestingly, whenever the radio gets reset, the two stations I listen to come back on tuned to FM1 and FM2. So I haven't bothered to set any other presets yet.

 

The three times mine has done this now, it has not come back on after sitting for a while. (over 30 mins)

Here is a new twist to the audio going out on my nav radio. It only happened when my wife used the Escalade. The thing is, she isn't doing anything to the radio. Didn't even touch it when she was using the car. The only thing that is different is, she is using her own set of keys.

 

The radio works fine every time when I am using my keys, but if I use her keys, the audio shuts off.

 

I wonder if my wife's key fob (with remote lock and security) or the key is somehow not being recognized by the security system of the radio and it is putting it in like a partial theftlock? Partial because the navigation still works and the radio looks like it's playing but there is just no audio to anything (radio, navigation, RSE, CDX) no audio at all. If I reset the radio by pulling the fuse and use my keys everything works fine.

 

Has anybody heard of anything like this happening? Any idea how to fix it, like maybe the dealer can reprogram the security of the radio to recognize both sets of keys and fobs?

      This is NOT impact damage nor neglect. There were previous class action lawsuits because of such paint preparation st GM manufacturing plant. Not just the Cherry Red Color. This paint is applied in three processes to obtain the desired color.  The manufacturer will cover for 36 months or 36k miles only. That rust is actually corrosion because of the paint process failure. Corrosion is covered for 100,100 miles or a certain months. However their corrosion doesn't include this type. Go figure. Clearly manufacturer knew from previous paint issues. This started 3 weeks ago out of the blue.

      consider doing electrical testing?  I would guess some power or ground wire/connection has a problem.   alldata.com has wiring diagrams, connector pinouts and diagnostic procedures you can use to find where the problem is.

      can you tell if the reader is actually trying to get codes, and the pcm is reporting none, or is your reader just silently failing because it's not communicating with the pcm?

      Any joy with this truck seems to be short-lived.   The CEL for P0172 ("bank 1" too rich) is now "intermittent".   I'm not sure where to check, or re-check, and my energy to keep chasing problems with junk is wearing thin. The P0172 seems to set as I'm coming to a stop, completely off the throttle, when fully warm. At least, that's what it's done the 3? times it's set.   Everything appears normal on the scanner EXCEPT long term fuel trim. There's only one bank on this vehicle because it's an OBD 1.5 with only one upstream O2 sensor. At idle, it's around -16.4% and will dip to -18% occasionally at idle or off-throttle. LTFT approaches 0 when throttle is held at 2500rpm. Short term appears normal, much closer to zero all the time. The LTFT tells me the engine is running rich at idle but compensating at higher load. But, why?   The EVAP purge valve doesn't appear to be leaking/sucking fuel vapor continuously. Is it sticking just as I come to a stop and the engine is choking on fuel vapor and sets the P0172? But that doesn't explain the persistently negative LTFT. Disconnecting the purge valve doesn't seem to make any difference.   I suppose that leaves another dang issue with the fuel injector. A leaking fuel pressure regulator, a new leak in the spider, or a leaking fuel injector/poppet valve I didn't see, or a small crack in one of the spider legs.   The vacuum line leading to the fuel pressure regulator doesn't have raw fuel in it. It doesn't even smell like fuel when it's pulled off, not until you suck air through it, then you can tell it leads to a fuel component. I'd consider that normal? Nothing is signaling this is a FPR issue from the outside, at least.   The oil smells like fuel but it's not building volume. I've noticed most oil in most engines smells like fuel to some degree so it's hard to say if the smell is an issue or not. Or if the engine just still smells like fuel because the crankcase was full of it a few hundred miles ago. But it's been changed twice since that original issue of the leaking fuel line dumping fuel into the intake.   Patience is running very thin. Every win seems to be accompanied by two steps backwards, or another issue that leads to removing at least the top half of the intake manifold. Enough! LOL
