Jansen Posted September 1, 2005 Posted September 1, 2005 Due to escalating gas prices I think the time has come for a locking gas cap. Two questions: 1. How do I remove the lanyard on the stock gas cap with out breaking it? 2. When I change gas caps, will removing the stock gas cap trip any faults?
01silverado2500 Posted September 1, 2005 Posted September 1, 2005 I was thinking the same thing today.
RyanbabZ71 Posted September 1, 2005 Posted September 1, 2005 I just put one on. I used a screw driver to pry the rubber piece out and pop the new one. Didnt trip anything on my truck
az'03Silverado Posted September 2, 2005 Posted September 2, 2005 I replaced mine with a FRAM locking cap. Works fine. Good luck finding one, though. They're like wiper blades when it rains. They fly off the shelves.
Mighty HD Posted September 2, 2005 Posted September 2, 2005 I heard you can pop them off with a butter knife
snyps Posted September 2, 2005 Posted September 2, 2005 I used to run then, but then i lost my keys once, and that sucked. I guess I need to keep better track of my keys, or I won't be driving long.. haha
mudbug660 Posted September 2, 2005 Posted September 2, 2005 I had remembered seeing on in a magazine a while back I think it was styling concepts. but anyway it was chrome and it was a combination lock.
GM-Tech Posted September 2, 2005 Posted September 2, 2005 Most of the plastic locking caps I've seen are not worth what you spent for them. We remove 'em in service all the time when the customer forgets to give us the key and we have a need to take it off. Just squeeze it with a large pair of channel-locs and it turns right off. Maybe they've improved them since the last time I had to do that. And yes, we do see them set an evap leak DTC, but some work fine in this regard.
bobcat5544 Posted September 2, 2005 Posted September 2, 2005 LOOK YOU CAN GET A LOCKING GAS CAP IF YOU WANT, BUT IT WONT STOP ANY ONE, IF I NEED GAS THAT BAD I WOULD TAKE A DRILL RIGHT INTO YOU TANK AND DRAIN IT INTO SOME GAS CANS, OR UNHOOK THE POWER TO THE FUEL PUMP CUT A FUEL LINE STICK IT IN A TANK THEN HOOK UP A BATTERY THE CUT POWER WIRE TO FUEL PUMP ANS PUMP IT OUT IF YOU GOT A CHRYSLER MOST OF THEM HAVE A DRAIN COCK ON THE TANK. LEAVE IT TO CHRYSLER TO MAKE IT SO EASY
mudbug660 Posted September 2, 2005 Posted September 2, 2005 STOP SCREAMING!! nah just kidding. If there is a neighbor hood and I want to steal some gas I would rather just siphen out some gas of a vehicle without a lock on it rather than go through all the trouble of drilling, cutting, or wiring. But if someone wants your gas bad enough they can get if. But that's also like saying that if someone wanted my truck bad enough they could drag it onto a trailer or hotwire it so there no use to locking it or taking the keys out. That just my two.........oh sh**. someone stole my *#@%^?! two cents. Well I guess I had it coming I didn't lock it up.
Mighty HD Posted September 3, 2005 Posted September 3, 2005 Isnt there a small ball of some sort to prevent gas siphoning in the filler neck/tube?
chadlyt Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 Isnt there a small ball of some sort to prevent gas siphoning in the filler neck/tube? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Kindo what i was thinking. On the newer trucks, I thought they were all protected by someting internally.
lrymal Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 ...Maybe they've improved them since the last time I had to do that. And yes, we do see them set an evap leak DTC, but some work fine in this regard. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Local news station showed how a school's fleet pickup vehicles of GM trucks had their gasoline stolen. Thieves simply slashed the filler tube underneathe the bed and inserted a siphon hose that way. Didn't go through the gas cap tube at all.
Mighty HD Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 guess I'm going to get some galvanized pipe to slip over the filler neck.
