Oil cooler?

Recommended Posts

This kinda stems from my radiator question post....Does an oil cooler help keep actual engine temps down, or just keep the oil temp down and help extend the life of the oil? In other words, will an oil cooler/fan help my truck from running hot in extreme conditions while towing??

I agree with silverblazer,It might reduce the engine temperture a little but not a lot.

I can't see an engine oil cooler keeping the truck from running hot.

If you have an HD it should have an engine oil cooler on it already,There standard equipment on the HD's. (Although the oil runs through the radiator,Its not an "external" type)

a large party of the engine heat is transferred to the oil, especially from the pistons, therefore any decrease in the actual engine temperature (when running above 200) will decrease the oil temperature accordingly. In my opinion a larger oil pan, with an oil cooler would not be a bad investment especially with your engine working at such high temps, its easy for 5/30 or 10/30 to fry at those temps

Unless your running a very good quality synthetic oil. That's where they shine....

So if they don't drastically improve temps, whats the sense in one?

generally, every little bit WILL help, i would not think about towing without a transmission oil cooler, and an engine oil cooler is only one more safety step to ensure the life of the oil and the life of the engine

Oh, I see...  But Someone mentioned that the 2500HD came from the factory with a oil cooler?  Thats every single HD?

Yes I think all HD's have one in the radiator. Helps warm the truck faster and extend oil life. But I wondering if an additional cooler w/a fan would ACTUALLY lower engine temps. I take it that the majority thinks it won't help much. After talking w/Hayden inc, the fan clutch may be the problem. I have a "severe duty" clutch on order. They're also going to test my old one...Ill keep you'all posted.
